Good Samaritan Roadkill

SPOILER ALERT: Apparently, I'm an idiot.

Will somebody please explain to me what I did wrong? I read the call to go rescue people from the smashed, burning stations in several systems. I can help, and probably profit from saving those poor souls from the wreckage of their stations, I thought! Um, wrong.

So, sensing the call of glory, I jumped into my Beluga Liner, switched out passenger cabins for all economy, picked out the system Rhea and made tracks for the blazing station there. Now, I wouldn't take this ship into combat but she's not bad on the defensive side. Solid shields, good upgraded hull, engineered. Boy, was I going to burn.

The station (ITO?) was smashed up badly. The bomb(s) had torn off big pieces, and the fires were an inferno. Auto-docking must have been off-line, so I maneuvered my way in, after getting clearance, headed through the portal. The fires were like blow torches on my ship, and I never thought to bring a heatsink. I dodged the pieces of the superstructure, then tried to land on the assigned pad while my ship was actively melting. No matter how I tried, I couldn't land. Finally, I turned around and headed for the "door." Never made it. Turned to a charcoal cinder and blew up. Nice. Even with insurance - I hope they don't cancel my policy, it was pricey to replace.

Did I learn my lesson?

NO.

Live, die, repeat.

Only the second time, I managed to escape the burning station and was 7km away when I blew up, imploded, whatever. I wrongly believed - get away from the burning station, and your hull will not continue to burn up. No, it did. Thank you.

Fortunately, this time I had enough sense to head back to home port in Dumata, instead of reenacting the whole burnt marshmallow routine.

Anybody want to tell me ( not that I'm an idiot - I get that part ) what I did wrong?

As soon as you leave the station airlock your heat should return to normal fairly quickly.
Have you accidentally turned on silent running?
We're you in open?

Edit: And when manual docking the Beluga I usually have to slam it down quite hard, because I'm terrible at lining it up horizontally.

Right. It should have, but didn't. Maybe I was already a basic bonfire of a ship, and it didn't matter.

Nope. Not on silent running.

Not in open.

I think the Beluga Liner was way too big of a ship for that. I was being greedy. Maybe I should have tried my Krait Mk. II?

Equip two heat sinks. Make sure you know your keybinding for deploying them without having to deploy hardppoints.

Equip all economy passenger modules.

Upon entry through the busted toaster rack, deploy one heat sink and deploy landing gear. Just before you land deploy another. Immediately select system services and you will be brought below deck where it is cool.

Select reputation for the mission rewards.

Select the smallest passenger groups first with the highest rep reward. Fill up everything if you can.

Select launch.

Once released deploy a heat sink.

Retract landing gear and move tot he exit. You may have to deploy another heat sink in that big boat of yours.

Many folks use pythons for this because of their agility.

Race out, and back to the rescue ship. Rinse repeat. Solo or PG only for this. The large pads are in short supply.

Lots of things 😛.
For starters, you used a Beluga. Yes, that's one of the largest ships for carrying passengers. But, as you found out, she also takes some experience to manually land and runs as somewhat hot. A lot of other ships are better - I used my exploration Dolphin. Three slots for passengers (5,4,4). Doesn't overheat. Not even when parking in the middle of the burning hangar, deploying my two limpets and watching them fill up the little cargo space I had left.
Then, (if you're on PC) get EDDiscovery. It'll read the player journal and display the history in a nice table so you can see afterwards what happened when.

Beluga's have an issue with over heating to begin with. Deliberately flying one into a station which is on fire, just makes it more so. Not having any heat sinks in a Beluga isn't prudent under normal circumstances. Having none while involving the ship in a rescue is just crazy.

Thanks Cmdr Nemo LXXI.

Concurred. I've long suspected the crazy part.

I definitely won't be trying that particular tactic again.

However, I did install heatsinks on most of my ships today. Those things seem rather handy.
