Thanks for the update, Mike.
I do them both ways, both from the ground and air. Many times if I see a data point or some cans to steal, I'll do the same and go to ground. Often times I do them from the air because I like the immersion of being that nameless, faceless gunship that just pops up on the horizon and starts raining rockets down own people's parades

I also like having to run from air patrols.
Spotting POIs from your ship can be tricky. Yeah, if it's a research or mining site, the lights and the objects can be easy to see. If it's just a downed ship or a nav beacon, you often have to look for the "little black dot", which can be tough to do from the air. That's why when I run air missions, unless I get a visual on the POI straight away, I move on and find another that is more easily detectable. Often times, the main installation will have two or three small POIs within one or two km of it.
It's also important to note that the
actual POI doesn't necessarily spawn the moment the circle appears. This is evidenced by the fact that sometimes what should be visible from "a mile away" will appear right in front of you. The easiest way I find to spot the actual POI is as follows (this is from my DBS gunship, which has a good FOV):
- Start with zoomed out sensors (Hit PgUp repeatedly. Holding it won't do.)
- Cruise at 2km altitude until you see a circle appear at the edge of your sensors.
- Line up to fly straight through the center of the circle
- At the circle's edge, drop your speed to about 100km/h, and pitch down to about -30 degrees
- Fly like a chopper... use upward thrust "R" to maintain both altitude and forward momentum. Try to keep yourself between 1.5km (where the circle disappears) and 1.8km (for easier visibility, i.e. the higher you go, the more difficult it is to spot objects). Use side thrusters to maintain your position on the center-line of the circle (using the mouse to "roll" only screws it up, I find).
As you cruise through the center of the circle in this way, visually scan the ground for the POIs. At 1.7km, you shouldn't see "rocks", so any "black dot" will likely be the POI. Of course, things like research facilities will show up big and recognizable (and, like I said, sometimes will spawn right in front of you). Many times, the POI will appear in your forward FOV.
If I pass through the circle and don't find the POI, then I move on to the next one. No point wasting time, flying in circles.
Regarding money -- yeah, doing these mission repeatedly in a specific combat zone made me so rich that in small/medium builds I figuratively have infinite lives. Great mission to grind for cash (and rank!), if you can find a consistent stream.
Glad you had fun, and hope all of this helps. Good luck!
