Good thing I ordered CV1 and not the Vive

Because Vive's getting advertising inside it.

I understand when companies want to monetize their "free" products by injecting ads, but not in something people paid for £800.
IMO this is just a blatant middle finger and spit in the face to all the Vive users.
My condolences.

Except it's opt-in, only for apps on HTC's Viveport platform which nobody uses and only applies to F2P games. So yeah... nope.

Good that its opt-in, we need to be vocal if ads start cutting in and out in VR that are not connected with the VR experience itself.

To be honest, I don't mind subtle product placement in the game and in context (like the Audi cars in the Will Smith I, Robot reboot etc. Ok, ok, that didn't class as subtle, but you get the idea... :p ).

If its not too distant future, present companies will likely still be around, and I don't see advertising going away any time soon.
If its far future then you still should have some advertising (Weyland Yutani etc).

I'm not feeling too smug about my purchase. If VIVE gets away with it, then Facebook is sure to follow <sigh>

Really not convinced that high-end VR headsets is where HTC, Samsung, Valve or Facebook will want to be placing advertisements. It's the mobile market they're after because that's where the volume is. The majority of Rift and Vive games will no doubt continue to be released ad-free simply because those that *do* release with adverts will be shunned.

I'm sure it will, especially now that Palmer left the Oculus.
[knocked out]

How so? Was Palmer somehow stopping FB's desire to include adverts? (I say this because he didn't strike me as any kind if saint). Or were you being ironic?

I actually don't know why I thought that, my circuitry got shorted, but you're right, he probably isn't a saint and ads would be introduced sooner or later nevertheless.

Despite Palmer Luckey's political leanings (I still find it hard to believe what he did) he is a true VR evangelist. He always said he didn't want people feeling nauseous when they used his headsets.. and what's more sickening than having adverts forced down your throat.

i think that is naive

if it does well expect it to appear in all vive apps AND oculus stuff as well

that said, it amuses me slightly, of all the rib ticking i have read from those who are all anti oculus / facebook have been saying was "you are going to get spammed with facebook like adds"

who knew the vive would go that route 1st!? (am sure some will have a good reason why it is fine in the vive tho, but disgraceful if in the rift )

Someone will code an ad blocker at some point if it gets silly. I've yet to see a single ad, but only use the Vive for Elite, as of late.

This may sound at odds with my previous post, but I'm quite happy to sport two opposing positions..

It seems a shame to own a VR headset and just play the one game. How would you feel about a free-to-play game if all you had to do was endure a few adverts to play it?

The free games I'd gotten with my Oculus Rift have been quite good fun.

Need to remember that the Vive is just made by HTC, it runs Valve software. Facebook owns Oculus and its software. It's the software that would be presenting any ads, not the hardware, the hardware just makes the monitoring possible.
