good trade routes for beginners

More important than knowing the exact routes is keeping an eye on the tech level/gov structure of the planets around you.

Remember where each type of commodity is sold and where they are likely to be wanted. The inventory screen gives this information in it's most basic form but work that stuff out and the rest is simple :)

Also when arriving at a station to sell, make sure you check the mission board to see if anyone is offering extra creds to purchase stuff that would normally sell on the market as you can make a lot of extra creds if you sell it to a desperate buyer ;)

as rafe points out the knack is finding something cheap selling it high is the basics of trade. go into the gal map look at a systems status then look for boom and then look for a corresponding status system, so a boom agri system will make you moony by selling at a famine state system as food or medicine is needed a hitech system will make you money for say reactive armour if you sell at a system in a war state. just be aware the trade info can be a bit borked of late I tried to find a commoditie but the systems I went to under the info provided was wrong for a few locations

One other thing that may be slightly off topic but to do with your jump range... changing the routing options from fastest to economical is sometimes well worth doing. Little hops can vastly (and that really 'is' vastly) increase the distance you can travel with the fuel available to you :)

I would recommend running rares in a Cobra mkiii or perhaps a hauler. An 11ly jump range, which becomes less as you add tonnage to the vessel, will become a trial when you have to travel 150+ly to sell the rares for the expected profit. A Type-6 is likely the lowest level ship you would want to perform bulk trading in. It's fast, has greater than 100T capacity, and a good jump range. It can also easily be used for a bit of exploration as well.

Here's what I did:

Atagat <-> Erne

Two close systems with short trip to station. Ran Platinum one way and probably Performance Enhancers the other. Got a T6, worked towards and eventually snagged a T7 for myself. I tried some rare trading in the T7 but it took ages and wasn't best suited for running away from a fight. So I carried on trading until I discovered Community Goals. Used a few of these to earn myself enough to buy an Asp (min CR10m). With the Asp I went back out on a couple of rares trading loops using this loop at first.

Spoiler alert *cough* ;)

Consider trading Rare Commodities

With that relatively small outfit I suggest completing delivery missions (be Planet Express) until you can afford a ship with some legs and cargo capacity. Trade is all about taking a decent amount of stuff somewhere else to be sold. A ship with low cargo cap and short legs is at a disadvantage in trading. Once you have a ship with legs (but preferably able to land on Medium landing pads) you might consider running rare commodities. Rare commodities are sold in small batches that return high profits for the minimal work investment of waiting around for the small batches to replenish (need patience) and then driving them 150+ LY (need legs) to be sold. There are several rares routes maps available online if you Google "Elite Dangerous, Rare Commodities Route". I used the one three posts up effectively. o7

below 100T of cargo, bulktrading isn't worth it.

rare goods trading is in the game for exactly that reason - as a beginners way of trading: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/63119-Rare-Commodities-List!

rares are effected by states, so routes you'll find all over the web are never up to date - check the galaxy map/system map whether the market is in boom!

Came here to post this. Bellow a T6, bulk trading is worthless. Run rares. Around T6-ASP level is where this flips and bulk trading becomes more profitable (though arguably more boring).

If you do one of the longer Rares routes it's actually not that boring and you get to see quite a few popular hotspots in the bubble. Although longer loops are better in something with more cargo (like a T6 or ASP).

If you look at some of the Engineer rares requirements you can tell that FD intended for players to run rares loops to unlock Engineers as they are always in some system that provides rares but of course most players go for speed so they end up just grinding the rare delivieries one way.
