Got a queston...

Look at this. I found this online, can't remember where....someone's explorer build let say.....

http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp_scout/02D4D4A3D2D4D4C------32--2i2f.Iw19kA==.Aw19kA==

Notice he has put 2 scanners on his Asp Scout. One Detailed Surface Scanner and one Advanced Discovery Scanner...

ok

Now, I thought one scanner was enough!!!!!!, you need two for proper exploring????????? One of each?????

I thought the Advanced Discovery Scanner did everything!!!????

Regards,

The Advanced Discovery scanner "honks" and reveals all of the stellar bodies in a system, the surface scanner scans the surface and reveals more information (more cash when you hand it all in).

Regards,

ADS doesn't do anything else than let you honk the whole system (as in exposing the orbit elements regardless of how far they are).

To get every bit of data about planets you go scan you indeed do need DSS along, otherwise you'll get less data (and thus less credits when turning in the data).

You only need one DISCOVERY scanner basic, intermediate or advanced. These scan the system. The detailed surface scanner adds more detail to the scan that you do by pointing your nose at the star/planet, and doubles the payment for that information so is worth fitting. Well Ninja'd in the time it took me to type :)

Hi,
You need both to explore properly. The Advanced Discovery Scanner only finds the stellar bodies. The Detailed Surface Scanner scans the bodies when you select them and are close enough. The Detailed Surface Scanner is the one that makes the money. :)

To use the Discovery Scanner, you have to trigger it with a key or switch. The Detailed Surface Scanner is automatic. You just target a star or planet and point it. A little whirly symbol displays on the left side of your HUD until the scan is complete. You have to be close enough to the object for the scan to work.

Let's say that you were neutron star farming (collecting all the data to sell). You jump to the new system, fire your discovery scanner, target the star (from your nav panel because you can't see it), point your ship at it, wait until the detail scan is complete, then jump to the next system with a neutron star and repeat. After you've done 1000 and your brain is totally numbed, you can start the 8 hour journey home to sell the data and collect 83 million for it.

The various Discovery Scanners (Advanced, Intermediate, Basic), initially when triggered, will locate every Astronomical Object within range (Infinite, 1,000LS, 500LS), and then, when you target and approach the Object the DS will then take a closer look (you do NOT need the DSS for this to happen). This is where the Detailed Surface Scanner comes into play. It is, in effect, a pair of binoculars for the DS, and will increase the amount of data gleaned (and, as a result, increase the value of the scan).

If you are just meandering, and are not doing serious exploring, you can get away with the Advanced Discovery Scanner. However, if you are serious about exploring, fit a Detailed Surface Scanner as well (OK, you lose an internal slot), and it can roughly double the value of your scans.
