Hardware & Technical Got an x55 for Xmas - woe is me!

Had a t flight to start, liked it, but not enough buttons. Got an x55 pro, took a bit of getting used to, but now love it, so much so I gave the t flight to a noob cmdr to help him get started. Persist, and spend time getting your bindings sorted, you will get used to it, and in the long run in my opinion it is a better way to fly ;)
Also had voice attack, but it gets tedious repeating yourself, and it just isn't reliable enough. A black widow chroma keyboard means I program the keys I need with colour codes to match the X55
Functional and it all glows in the dark :)

Ah it's ok, you're all just confirming what I know in my heart already..

Yes unfortunately :( I 'upgraded' from a T-Flight recently to an X52 Pro. Like you it was my Xmas gift. So far in order to enjoy it I have had to add magnets to the internals to reduce the deadzone and increase sensitivity, add a sponge to the springs to tighten it up, add grease to the stick to reduce friction, remove the indents in the throttle, fight with the crappy Saitek software and drivers to get it working.

And after all that my conclusion after a month of use is that the T-FLight is a better stick. I was thinking of 'upgrading' again to the X55 but you have just confirmed that the T-Flight may be coming out of retirement.

I really miss the rudder and centre indent on the throttle too! That was a genius move by Thrustmaster.

Best thing to do with an x55 is return it or sell it to another unsuspecting soul. Worst cheap pizza Saitek/Madcatz ever made. Went through three of them things. Really wanted to like it for the twist but it was like a Mcdonalds happy-meal toy. All three were broke in some form or fashion and just felt way to light and cheap. Hell you can't even operate either controller without screwing it down they are so light.

Love my X-55.
Set a deadzone on your throttle so you have an intuitive zone where the throttle is at zero. Also practice.

Ah, the I hate the X-55 support group has arrived. They always do. Sure the X-55 has had issues...so have the other two. Still there are many who you won't hear from because they never had an issue with any of them. So let's compare an entry level T-Flight HOTAS X to a Saitek X-55 and the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog.

Thrustmaster Warthog - £280
Emulates A-10C Thunderbolt controls
Metal casing
Lots of switches, buttons and Hats
Throttle resistance adjustment
No Z-axis (yaw) control
Impression - Smooth Joystick, Throttle action. Requires rudder input via keyboard, pedals.

Saitek X-55 - £140
Emulates modern fighter controls
Plastic casing
Lots of switches, buttons and Hats
Joystick spring tension adjustment
Throttle resistance adjustment
Yes Z-axis (yaw) control
Impression - Feels Lighter and less robust vrs the Warthog. Otherwise best deal for the cost.

T-Flight HOTAS X - £40
Detachable Throttle
Plastic casing
Limited switches, buttons and Hats
Yes Z-axis (yaw) control
Impression - Best entry level controller. Requires additional keyboard/gamepad inputs.

Personal observation : My X-55 has flown hundreds of hours in the X-Plane 10 flight simulator before ever getting connected to ED and is still going strong. It connects to both X-Plane and ED directly in-game and does not require any software profiles.

Given the game has 208 controller inputs and an additional 69 inputs for the SRV the more controls at the fingertips the better.

I've had the x-55 for a few months now and also had the Tflight before, and yep it has a few quirks but I love using it.

My throttle was sticky and still is a little bit. I just tightened the drag on it and gave it s good workout which seemed to help and of course didn't viod the warranty.

Agreed the handrest should have been adjustable and I'm just about ok but I may pad it out a bit.

I'd like to map the small mouse on the throttle to the turrets on the SRV and haven't managed to do so yet.

The x-55 is a fantastic stick however it could do with a update.

Hi Hoop - never my intention to bash the x55, its a great stick, just sharing how hard it is to go from one stick to another, like starting from scratch in many ways.

Also feel duty bound to point out, the T thrust does have z axis Yaw control, if by which you mean twisty twisty turny turn.

oh and thanks mods for moving the thread, sorry for starting in the wrong place..

Am i a member of this so called X55 Hate Group, My post would suggest a resounding YES!.......But i love the stick, i just HATE their build quality and Customer Support (Actually rename that to "Customer Non Support").

I am on my 3rd X55 since June, Unlucky? Hmmm some may say so, but looking at not just this forum on the X55, but Google in general, i think not. The stick is brilliant, the control placement and number of control inputs is fantastic. Hooplah, have you had your stick apart? I asume you may have as you have had it for many years, but 'Have a look at the cheap micro switches used, have a look at the shoddy soldering, the use of plastic on plastic sliding surfaces, the lack of Lubrication, the poor cable run designs.....etc etc! I should not have to take a brand new £156 / £160 bit of equipment, take it to pieces, to apply more lubrication or grind down plastic surfaces !!!!!!!!!

They have a great design of stick, if they could just improve of build quality, and SACK the entire 'couldn't give a damn' Customer support team and employ people who actually care about their product!

Ok, i may have just been unlucky in my X55 Experience, and compared to your experience it seems that i am! Will i be buying a new X55 'WHEN' this one gives up the ghost?...No, not unless it undergoes a redesign, don't even mind paying more!

Alternatives? Hmmmmm obvious choice is the better built Warthog, but it has no twisty yaw! X52...Hmmm Same stable as the X55, but seems to have less grumpy customers/users! T-Flight..... Could not go back to a stick which has less control inputs!!

Damn, i just don't know!

Lol I just remembered, Does anyone else's joystick creak and groan when using the yaw/twist?

Very hard to pretend you're not playing ED while on the phone to a lady and pretending she's got your full attention.

'What are you doing?'

'Err... nothing just a couple of bits on the computer.'

Creeeeeeeak....

'What was that?'

'Umm... dunno....'

Creeeeeeak...groan...

'You playing that game again?'

Creeeak......

'no.'

Creak....

''Yes you are..'

'No, I'm paying attention, honest....

(Continues in this vein for a considerable length of time.)

Oh So this............!

I moved from a T-Flight to the X55 and to begin with I was completely overwhelmed by the number of controls, to the extent I almost gave up.

But now, having bedded in to the new stick I absolutely love the X55! :)

haha thats all very true!

Especially when the conversation is smattered with voiceattack commands!:

"uh huh, uh huh, yeah ok... Request docking! uh huh"

"What?"

"Hmm? Oh just need to request docking for the uh, you know, for the carpet in the living room.."

"I'm leaving you."

Good to know it can happen! I will persevere!

This is incorrect. The T-Flight has Z axis on the stick and it has a separate rudder control axis built into the throttle. In this sense it is better than the other two as they either only offer one or neither. ;)

Been there done that :)

Yes to twisty turn. Thanks for letting me know and I updated the post. I was going with online specs so I must have picked a site that was in error or read it wrong.
