got any advice for a returning gamer?

i haven't played elite in quite a while. i left with a fully upgraded conda, T9, ASP, and 100M in bank. assuming that i "grind" to get the rank to buy a corvette, sell my conda and type9. then what? is it back to getting bored and waiting for the next I-win-ship? is there anything to do other than grind? is there still no sign of late game content?

Forget those flying whales. Buy a Vulture, kit it out, go to a RES/CZ and scream around blasting the bejeesus out of ships 30 times the value of yours whilst cackling manically :D

If your game is just a grind to get the next ship then it probably won't be any better for you, with or without the corvette

He has a point. ED is a big sandbox. Sometimes its easy to just say "its all sand". But to get the most from the game you need to engage your imagination. Set yourself some goals that you've not tied before. Experiment with other aspects apart from grind (there's a big galaxy out there). Align yourself with a faction, PP, local, player, doesn't matter. Declare war on another. Try to think what would be cool, rather than the next ship progression list. If you can do this whilst teaming up with other players you're enjoyment will increase ten-fold.

Apart from that planetary landings and a host of other improvements will be appreciated, but define a meta that you get lasting enjoyment from.

you know, the "use your imagination" argument was fine when the game first came out, but now, it doesn't hold water considering they expect me to shell out 60 dollars, the price for another AAA title, for land buggies. sry guys, not convinced.

I understand, but tbh ED isnt like other AAA titles. Your run of the mill AAA title is like going to see a Hollywood blockbuster. Its entertaining and the effects are great, but its not going to last much longer than the summer season and you are unlikely to watch it repeated times. As with all the best things, ED repays what you put into it. Nothing is served up gratis, you need to engage with it. All i do know is that if you do (and if you dont want to thats cool) it can repay you in spades. If at the end of the day youre playing and then just asking why?! at the end of it, perhaps its not the game for you.

I just like being in space.

Hmmm, I still find it fun 5000 odd kills in, but I did take a break of a few months for a little while.

To answer your question properly, no, it's pretty much the same thing it was a year ago except you can land on planets now too. If it wasn't floating your boat then, it probably won't now either tbh.

Shields.

This is the thing most returning people assume they still don't need; and get a nasty shock to discover they actually do (and then hop onto the forums to vent their collective spleens).

Well the game only has so many mechanics - trade, missions, mining, bounty hunting/combat zones and exploring. The game has 6 ranks/ratings (I included CQC). This actually has not changed too much from early days.

If you have done all the mechanics to death then have a potter around on a surface of a planet and explore the new mechanics on the surface in 2.0 seens like something to do. Then I expect you should put it away again.

Exercising any of the mechanics without a context and a group of chums with similar objectives seems remarkably boring to me. Early on we all share the same objectives as they are ranking based as a context for our mechanics use. Then you get to a point where you are "happy" with your ranks, or rather your current position is acceptable compared to repeating the mechanics for the next rank. We all at some point share the desire for a certain ship, so that drives us on.

There comes a time where you cannot find a new context or drive to use the mechanics - sounds like yo hit that bit before your break (I hit in Feb last year but my rank requirements were very low!) I would suggest you find another context, such as Powerplay, or the BGS to gives the mechanics some context - also some variety. This is the most Vanilla "more to do". Alternatively sounds like your rich, why not help new players or becomes a fuel rat - the Anaconda is the best ship to be fuel rat.

Protecting Nubies you can pass on your trading skills, and their will be combat as you protect them. Fuel rats looked really good fun from Ed's stream.

I am sure there are many more things, there appears to be groups of players for just about anything, but I think you have moved beyond being driven by ranking or next ship, there is no "prescribed" next phase you need to go find one that suits you.

The game is prety much like when it was released.

The best will be to wait 1 year and a half or maybe 2 years, asuming there will be no surprises which I dont really expect. Maybe then things will change.

An advise, dont buy Horizons yet.
