Got my DK2 yesterday. First impressions from me and the family.

My rift arrived yesterday around 2:30PM so decided to wait for one of my boys to get home from school before unboxing it. He was well excited as it was a complete surprise for him.

INITIAL SETUP

Setting it up to play demos via direct to rift was easy, and I was well impressed with the first one (called 'welcome to oculus') it gave me my first taste of what was to come. I laughed out loud a few times with sheer joy of how it was making me feel.
Of course, had a queue of family members lined up ready to show it off to, and they all enjoyed the demo, and the next one, and the next one. We tried Helix Rollercoaster, the chair, and surge, which were all impressive in their own way.

ELITE SETUP

Once the kids were in bed, I started setting up for Elite, but found it really fiddly with the 'extended desktop' scenario, but got there in the end, but it was very late, I was very knackered, and for some reason my ED controls had reset, so I had a quick look, was impressed, but the chromatic aberration was staring me in the face like an unwanted gatecrasher at a party. Still I went to bed fairly optimistic that a bit more tweaking and learning the ropes of how it all works and becoming more familiar and I'd get it looking better in ED.

So today I spent a good few hours on and off, researching and tweaking and by this evening I cannot tell you how blown away I was by my time in Elite. It is just immense and I am so glad I made the decision to get a DK2 even though the CV is on the horizon.

The clincher for me was Colour Settings in the Nvidia Control Panel as suggested in this awesome thread - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=121355 it really improved the visuals for me, but I skipped it early on as I couldn't suss out how to get my rift to show in the Nvidia CP. Realised today it would only show up once I was in the rift in extended mode.

Yes there are still issues, like the stars are a bit blurry etc etc, but over all it is one amazing experience and I now cannot imagine playing Elite any other way.

One other small annoyance is it's not the most comfortable thing to wear and I get very hot very quick, and the lenses steam up a tad, but it's no biggy, as it is just a Dev Kit, but I hope these things will be less so when a CV comes along.

I was also concerned about my IPD which the rift measured at 66, and the online thingy with the web cam/credit card test, measured it at 67, which I've read is maybe on the high side which may make it more blurry. Anyway, tonight I fiddled around a lot with the position of the headset and found a 'sweet spot' for me which I'm happy with, and is relatively clear. Inside the cockpit is crystal clear (my god it's awesome) and the text in the ship menu's is fairly clear too, and really easy to read. The game main menu is less readable but not a big problem.

BEST MOMENTS

My best moment tonight, well there were a few but by far the best was loading up in solo, where my ASP is parked near the core just off a ringed gas giant. I put the ship into a nice position facing the planet, sun gleaming in the cockpit, then I got my boys down to the office one at a time.
I made them hold the x52 like the pilot is inside the game, then I slipped the rift down over their eyes. Their jaws dropped instantly and they both said out loud 'oh...my...god...' as their faces turned into a gaping smile. They were absolutely amazed and so I let them both have a little fly around in the ASP, as it did look gorgeous near the core with all the stars, and then I fired up the first combat training mission for them both so they could have a bit of fun. To say they loved it is an understatement, I think they'll be dreaming about it tonight :)

Anyway, those are my first impressions, which in a nutshell is - It is totally amazing, even with its low res and screen door etc, the DK2 is well worth the price, even for the 6 months or so that it'll be in use before the CV's come along. Thanks for talking me into it guys! (even the mrs was well impressed!)

Minti2

Deadly, But very fluffy...
Nice mate glad your kids enjoyed it, and agree, i had a go at the ED launch party and was blown away how amazing it was, graphically and the difference play-wise to....am waiting for the CV version myself next year, anyhow enjoy! :)

A tip to fix the lenses steaming up problem... turn your rift on and leave it with a solid colour desktop wallpaper background on its display and leave it for 10 minutes to warm up before use.

I was gonna say Dungeon Keeper 2 has been out for ages but then realised ya talking about the rift

I see you have now come a long way since......
I certainly have, haven't i :)

Thanks for this, i'll give it a go.

I just want to check I'm doing things right. When I switch my rift on (in extended mode) my monitor then just shows the windows logo instead of my desktop. I figure this is normal? the reason I ask is because yesterday I tried to get my monitor to show in game footage so I can see what the kids are doing in there, as detailed in this thread - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=43396 though it would not work for me. Do I have to change any other settings anywhere? I've updated the AppConfig file, but that alone didn't do it. I will ask in the relevant thread later if no one knows. Cheers all

No, you should see the desktop on both monitor and rift.
In the Windows "Screen Resolution" window you should see 2 displays: The monitor and the Rift. Make sure you select "Extend these displays" at "Multiple displays" and set the Rift to "Landsecape" orientation.
In my configuration the Rift is the secondary display.

Ok, thanks for this. Will have another go at it later and see what I can change.

Go for it Tony, thanks

Hi Chaps, I have found that using Rain-x Antifog on the lenses has taken away misting problems for me. For total immersion can i recommend using an Elite Voice Attack pack. I downloaded the Midnight soundpack and having Tom Baker in the cockpit is something else!

Oh, please let your kids have a go at this:

They'll probably call you names, but mysteriously still want you to inflict it on their friends :)

Glad the whole gang is enjoying it! :)

The only way I've found to get the game to display on my monitor while playing on the rift is to use this tool: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=65258
Select the 'second window' option.
Only downside is it seems to have a pretty big perf hit. Although you might have better luck.

EDIT: reading the link in your post, i think that's what this app might be doing.

That sounds like you're running the Rift as your primary monitor. You don't need to do that for ED. Some software needs it, but ED doesn't. The extra window is probably appearing on the primary desktop monitor (the Rift), underneath the game.

Set the monitor as primary, and then see. Make sure the Rift is on when you launch ED, or it'll appear on the monitor, even with the VR stuff enabled. Hopefully, when you start ED, it will appear in the Rift, and your extra window will appear on the primary desktop. Don't try and combine SweetFX with the extra window, BTW, it doesn't like that.

Welcome to the future Commander. Take my advice and invest in some of these. http://vrcover.com/ They make it so much more comfortable when wearing the Rift for longer periods of time. No more itchy sponge face. I have no affiliation to this company, just a happy customer.

Thanks Guys, I've now sorted it so the rift is the secondary monitor.

After what you said above about SweetFX, I removed the files/folders from my ED folder, but then ED would not launch, only in training, so I had to put the SweetFX stuff back and it now works again?

Thanks for all your help.

I'm guessing you missed a bit- so SweetFX was still hooking DirectX when the game was launched- but then most of the SweetFX install was missing, so it fell over. Glad the game is working better for you in the Rift now though :)

I might just do that. I've found my forehead really aches when wearing the rift. Have to keep adjusting it. I last about 45 mins then have to have a break for a few mins. Thanks for the link

I love these threads. Olmis you have made me smile :-]

AS for the achy forehead - sounds like you might have the top strap too tight.
Or just a rather odd shaped head.

I have mine comfortable enough to play for many hours at a time no probs. So much so that the wife and kids wet themselves laughing at me when they came home to find me sat in the dark, lit only by the LEDs on my hotas with no lights on and all the curtains still open. I hadn't noticed.

I love the DK2 and its a bit ship. The future for VR gaming/entertainment is awesme.

PS, another slightly sideways but no less awesome use for the Rift: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1436197736/the-apollo-11-virtual-reality-experience-education
It's a bit good and shows the entertainment/eduicational possibilities of VR.

Just have a cold one every break pretty soon it doesn't bother you anymore, cheers!
