Got the rest of my "VR" setup up. It's coming together nicely!

So short of a little bit more wire management, I would say my setup is just about complete. Just got this Obutto Revolution finished today. It was a beast of a project to break down my entire office, break down my computer setup, move the traditional office furniture out into the garage, build the cockpit, then reassemble everything and do wire management. Took me roughly 8 hours. Only have a single monitor for now, but will run a 3+1 (3mon + OR) monitor setup once I go SLI in the future. Sitting in this thing REALLY adds to the immersion of being in space in ED when combined with the OR. Hand placement is identical to the model in the ship... I literally get lost out there.

Very nice! Congrats! Mine is also close to being done. Going to work on it a bit today. Not as nice looking as yours though because mine is just an old carseat on some wood, but it has wheels and four transducers (and costs next to nothing). Now that I see yours I'm thinking I should paint mine black and/or maybe upholster it a bit.

Haha wat joy and awesomeness.

Speaking of which, that room looks absolutely ideal for surround sound speakers

The open-ear Sennheizer headphones are superior to any surround sound speaker setup. When the positional audio SDK comes out it will really be a thing to behold.

Love your building skills. Can you also make a cage for my mother in law ...

ok. now you have do trim your room like a spacestation-hangar for ultimate immersion while doing a coffee break.

but for all that, nice job so far ;)

Lovely. I'll set a goal to get them one day if you really recommended them

They are over-the-top fantastic. However, you will notice I have they paired with a subwoofer that my wife can feel at the other end of my 4000 square-foot house. Also, they are "open ear", which means you can hear things in the room with your music, and others in the room can hear what you're listening to. They are ideal for sound quality, but not ideal for "not bugging others around you". Also, no integrated mic. I am running an Antlion in tandem.

A good closed back alternative are the de facto Sound Guy's cans:

Ignore the misleading marketing "DJ" tag. These are professional monitors that have existed for far longer than DJs have been using them. If you hire an expensive location sound guy, or someone to sort setup out at an eye-watering day rate at Radio 3, chances are, he'll come with a pair of these. They are not speech presenter cans, like the old grey DT700, au contraire, they are at home to Mr. Bass too.

They are light, but far more robust than they seem. Everything is available as a spare. They sound nice, especially after running in. You need a reasonable headphone amp to drive them, as the default is 70 Ohm. I have had the same pair since about 2008 (I think) and they're still going strong. They're probably the most popular "workhorse" cans that Sennheiser has ever made.

Obviously, they're closed back, which means they leak less and isolate more. However, equally obviously, you get a more "enclosed" soundstage, and just a shade of low-frequency resonance. However, they sound nice and last for years, without driving people around you nuts. One caveat- they are capable of very high output levels; watch your ears.

People should shop around- prices vary wildly. Only buy from authorised suppliers- headphones are one of the most commonly faked bits of consumer electronics. Oh, and avoid HD-25 SP.. they look similar, are somewhat cheaper, but are vastly inferior.. a common gotcha.

Those are cool. I personally wanted open-ear headphones as I am running extererio LFE.. I need the low-end to bleed into my ears from my sub. It's a killer combination.

They are, though I secretly want some of these:

..terminated with an XLR mic cable and a TRS headphone cable to go neatly into my desktop DAC/ADC. They'd pee on any "gaming headset" ever made, though probably cost more than I could justify with a clear conscience.

One question, have you considered adding a Buttkicker to that lot? Seen it used with fridge-sized subs as part of an experimental rig, and it really brought the bass uncomfortably close to home, might be killer with ED.

(..and no, a pair of binaural headphones are not superior to "superior to any surround sound speaker setup", far from it... Just I doubt that FD or Oculus are going to add higher order Ambisonics support any time soon :D)

That is my plan! I am thinking 4 kickers actually. Combined with the sub.. should be awesome. The more vibration I can get the better.

I have heard some pretty phenomenal surround setups (I am a bit of an audiophile), and I have to say the 598s put up quite a run for the money, at a meezly $150.... and as soon as the positional audio SDK is released, your surround sound speaker theory will be buried :D

I also saw these which look interesting...

Pretty pricey for a tin box but they seem at least semi legit :p
I saw that a while ago.. I think it looks totally hokey. Ill keep my revolution.

I use HD598s myself, I quite enjoy them
Awesome. I enjoy mine as well. The ONLY issue.. is the fact I have TWO wires now as I need to run a tandem mic.

Awesome, I was hoping you were, it seems the logical next step. I also don't feel guilty for encouraging you, muahaha.

Ah, I wasn't talking "a bit of an audiophile" grade. More "world-class treated listening room containing experimental gear driven by scary people". Not stuff I could fit in my home even if it was for sale. I have seen the future, and it's too silly to ever happen.

However, at the more consumer end, OpenAL does have some plugins that give simpler Ambisonics support- some of the Codemasters racers were particularly good on the PS3 in that respect, weirdly.
