General / Off-Topic Government Reaches Internet Target...!

"Superfast broadband now covers 95% of the UK".

Apparently.
By superfast, they mean 24mb/s+.

With that said, I've managed to live in the 5% for ages. Lol

My current house doesn't get fibre yet, and it's in the middle of Shrewsbury!
I get (on a good day) just 7mb/s. But usually 4-5mb/s. Sometimes 0... Lol

My old flat, which was a bit further from the exchange only got 2~mb/s. But! It got fibre, shortly before we moved.
It that only gave us a maximum speed of 21mb/s. Lol

My homes in Cornwall, (5 years ago now) also only got 7-8mb/s.

So, either the rollout is all lies, or I'm very unlucky. lol

Fibre in my area is scheduled for 5 months. However it said 6 months, 3 months ago....

Will I ever have decent internet? Lol

Who else lives in the 5%..?

Raises hand...

Actually my last move brought me to the edge of a fast zone, so sometimes it's that fast¹. Previously in London (way below), Central Cambridge (ha ha, what's broadband), Gloucester (nope) and Wales (yeah right...lol).

Now I'm in a tiny town north of Cambridge, and sometimes get good speeds. Of course, it's still orders of magnitude better than ever before. I just wonder where this 95% is, since I can't seem to find it.

===

¹ not often.

I'm hopefully moving near London soon™, assuming I can get a decent job.

I deliver out in Wales a lot, and everyone complains about the internet, but it's all still faster than where I live, which is like 0.3 miles from the exchange!

I actually get really annoyed when I drive through some pokey little village in the butt end of nowhere, and see "Fibre is here!" on every cabinet. Lol

"It’s worth noting that this isn’t measured via geographic coverage, either, but instead covers population"

Is the answer here ?

That makes sense, seems as the countryside is sparsely populated.
But central Shrewsbury? It's a huuuuuuge town. And it's constantly growing. Yet has crap interwebs.

That said, there's been loads of OpenReach vans parked around the cabinet closest to my house, which I'm hoping is mine, doing what looks like heavy work and laying cables.

Remember this is a lower standard, you know the lowest end connection, it is quite unlikely that if the network can carry 24mbs that it can't also carry more.

So as far as standards go its alright.

They are lying, the legislation that's being brought in to stop ISP's deliberately misleading customers about the speeds they get hasn't yet come into force. So the numbers they've based their announcement on are known (by them) to be false.

I would say that the 95% figure is based on numbers of users and not the geographical land mass. Therefore the cities and big towns have better connections and the larger population density and make up a large chunk of the 95%; while the rest of the country, takes pot luck.

Exactly. In France also the big cities have the optic fiber but not the small rural towns. But it begins to change
