GPU Overheating.

OMG! my gpu nearly melted

I havnt played since update 4 of Odyssey because i was seriously bummed out when FDev moronically admitted they would never be adding ship interiors or space walking which made me instantly transfer my stock to other projects but that aside i popped in just to see if Odyssey had progressed at all.

I just on a whim figured id want to give Eltie a Go again and was excited about Odyssey being maybe in a better place now jsut prior to update 7 dropping next month. After the usual time spent updating... everything loaded up fine just like it always has. thinking to myself that ill have to reteach myself how to fly i decided id do some flight refreshers once i got back aboard my ship. that being said i was immediately taken aback when i noticed something was odd about the graphical look of everything. i had a difficult time quite placing what was off but i realized the station seemed to be missing the atmospheric "haze" or whatever its called i used to see. everything was super crisp but any textures that were lower resolution were really showing now. it felt like i was playing a really crisp old game like old old... unreal tournament 2004 old. anyways i figured they were still messing with getting the performance for other users up and being that ive never experienced any performance issues during update 2 - 4 of the odyssey launch i figured they had to roll back some features for other users. reminded me of the time they removed planet darkness back when horizons first launched to be brought back after they added the night vision filter.

anyways, i took off and as expected it wasnt like riding a bike... i bumped my type 10's head on the mail slot and then her spoiler as i forgot how big this ship was and i was out of the station and MY LORD THAT PLANET BELOW ME WAS CRISP! i had a fine to go pay off so i figured id go take care of that first and then come back to that crisp planet afterwards. anyways i didnt bump my type 10's head getting into the mail slot but i still scratched the paint on her spoiler but i got my fine sorted and set my rout back to Altair. everything was smooth and it was starting to feel like i could never forget how to ride this bike when i completed my glide just over Phillips Dredging Enterprise only to realize very quickly that this settlement didnt have a landing pad for my fat so i figured id set down near by and pull out my SRV to check on the locals.

smooth as butter everything... i was gawking at how crisp the new rock textures were and the various chapes and sized of them all and even asking myself if maybe they had always looked that way and i just hadnt noticed before when i did start to notice some pixilation that reminded me of the graphics engine in the ancient mmo Mabinogi... and the notorious reason for that was due to Bloom being a brand new feature in games and so everyone had it dialed up to over 9000 so a lot of old games look super bright and causes textures to have this quazi 90s pixelated graphics but the pixels are super tiny which obviously wasnt possible in the 90s so more like typical early 2000s... anyways i put the thought aside and i figured that maybe FDev was still fiddling with the graphics and went on to pull out my SRV. anyways once in the SRV i roll out and notice that with my graphics so crisp the low resolution textures were really showing such as the trails my srv left behind i could even see how they weren't even laying on the ground but floating above it jsut a bit... (very immersion breaking) the new stuff though was amazing but as i began to roll around making my way over to the settlement i began noticing some very choppy graphics. i haven't experienced that before in Elite, Horizons, or my previous play sessions with Odyssey and what's more i began to smell something burning.

i looked around my room and over to my roommate to see if it was their laptop maybe overheating but the smell didnt seem to be coming from their direction. i looked at my system which is an open case design by Thermaltake and i love it! allowing me to very easily see and maintain every part. i put my fingers on my cooling dye situated over my cpu and as expected it was ice cold with Thermaltake liquid cooling... the fluid has maybe a year to go before i need to service it so its well within where it should be... but wait i can feel the heat rising from below. i quickly touched my RTX 2060 Super from MSI and it Fricken Burned my Hand! Normally my GPU is colder than my CPU but not this time it was so hot! and not just a little hot... but REALLY HOT... like my previous PC which was 11 years old before it died HOT. i realized instantly that THAT was what was causing the burning smell and i turned my SRV Around... got back in my ship and logged out.

i set about searching all over for how to read the temp on my Nvidia card but cant for the life of me find it anywhere... lots of google searches telling me its Okay if my GPU is a little hot... or actual step by step instructions on how to find the thermals for ATI and others... but nothing for Nvidia. i know not to just follow questionable links to most sites as gpus are one of the favorite targets of nefarious peoples interested in putting trojans and stuff on your system so i wont follow any link that doesn't have a check mark showing its secure and has a trusted rating by google.

however, in the time i was searching i noticed my GPU was back to its happy cool running temp it usually is but now im really worried. its not dust... i can visually see everything with my Thermaltake open chassis and there is no dust... though obviously that smell was dust burning so maybe a little has gotten inside that i cant see.

So i have 2 questions now... How do i clean the inside of a GPU Card? im not super tech savvy so opening my gpu's board is a no go for me. and is it my card or is it Odyssey that is the cause of that insane temperature? id always heard the nightmare stories of people having a hard time in the odyssey launch and aside from being stuck in the Apex vomit commit when they pass anywhere near a planetary ring id never experienced an issue with Odyssey due to performance. im not trying to push my rig and dont really care about all that. before i logged off i did see that my settings were set to ultra so after this update from Nvidia completes im going to try lowering the settings to see if the heating problem gets fixed but other then that i cant think of anything else to resolve that insane temperature.

look for a free programme gpu temp will be first in google search
I would start to worry at 90+ @85 can be normal if gaming in relatively warm ambient (23deg+)
as for cleaning the gpu heatsinks and fans buy a can of pressurised air duster one blast and if dusty youll see instant results (+clean paint brush )
do not use hoover (static kills pc,s)
still if worried drop from ultra as you did...…………..
whist specs may say your card can handel it it may very well lessen the life longevity if always running on the edge so to speak
that being said any signs of burning smells etc are never good signs if def coming from a pc yes you should be very concerned

No need to 'open' your GPU.. Just clean the dust where you can see it.. This will help:

https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

Download that (64 bit) and check the "sensors only" option when you launch it. More sensors than you can shake a thermometer at. :)

Also bear in mind that a GPU backplate can easily get 70+ °C when running at full steam, and a metal backplate will feel even hotter to the touch. A finger is definitely not a good measuring tool for that!

Odyssey can easily stress a GPU to its max (it gives me more or less the same temps of a dedicated stress tool like Furmark), but not more than that. It's up to your GPU to be working as it should to manage its temp inside its thermal design range. For reference, a RTX 2060, especially if a dual fan design, can easily run at 80+ °C under full load.

Hi,
I'm using an rtx2060.
I'm also running Palit Thundermaster for fan/temperature control.
MSI Afterburner works as well.
I've set the fan curve to 100% at 70C, so it's more agressive cooling than standard.
YOh can reduce the GPU load by limiting the frame rate:- if your monitor is 60 frame rate, then limit the FPS to 60.
in my rig, in supercruise in deep space, I was getting >100 FPS which is pointless with a 60 FPS monitor.

Unless you fiddled around with your GPU settings (overclocking), it can't (ok, really shouldn't) overheat. Instead, it will throttle down (to a full stop, if necessary) when it gets too hot. What you smelled was most likely the aforementioned dust getting warm.
As far as your finger goes - 60 degrees Celsius is the edge of its range, anything higher you can only check by seeing how fast it blisters ( or chars, in true CMOT Dibbler style). Which makes the finger test kind of useless for high performance electronics.

And yes, +1 for hwinfo64.

Just go to the NVIDIA support site and download the latest APP Centre from there after installation it will tell you everything you need to know about your graphics card.

Wow, that's a lot of text just to say your GPU is getting hot.

Sorry my bad, the APP centre on mine is a utility from my Gigabyte Motherboard support not NVIDIA. Perhaps they have something similar to APP at your motherboard support site?.
With Geforce Experience you can configure something called "Performance Overlay" (click on the gear icon when the UI pops up and select the HUD Layout option. From there click on performance and select the level of details you want. I use Advanced for the most extensive information), which allows you to monitor frame rates, clock speeds, temperatures and a few more things. It's configurable using Alt-Z and when configured it can be activated and deactivated with Alt-R.

I love how you give basically NO quantitative or relevant information about your rig, GPU, Temperatures or Anything Remotely Resembling Useful Information!

You give this Eight Paragaph Essay and dont touch anything that gives the community anything useful to help you diagnose the problem.

You want help? Then Give the following.
Case / Tower Model and Make if its Not a Tower Then list the Laptop
CPU Model, Make, Frequency in Hz, IE Clock Speed, Boost Speed, What You are currently Running it at, What your FSB Multiplier is at or if its set to Default. Do this for Memory, GPU, Hard Drive (Game Drive) when the parts were purchased, Whens the last time you updated Drivers, What are your current drivers version.
What is your current Cooling Solution, are you air cooled, water cooled? Are you using +Positive Air Flow or -Negative. How many fans do you have, When is the last time you opened up your case and cleaned out your including your GPU and the case intakes and exhaust.

Now list all of your Graphic Settings.

Simple fix, are you using a Nvidia GPU and do you have that "New AMD Graphic" setting on IE: AMD FSR? If so turn that off.

Are you using Geforce Experience? If so Uninstall it, goto Nvidia and download the current "STABLE" Video Drivers.

Protip I gave you the solution

Nice patronizing reply you wrote there. And all those requests of useless info (memory, hdd and when did you buy them? Yeah, that will surely solve it...) just to end up suggesting to disable FSR (which does nothing to possibly overheat a gpu) and Geforce Experience (which does nothing to possibly overheat a gpu). Hope you don't do this for a job with real clients, for the attitude on display here even more than for the supposed knowledge.

@Corazon - here's a pro tip. Ignore most of the above drivel. First thing we are waiting to know are still the actual temperatures of your gpu while playing (any of the above suggestions for checking them are fine, the performance overlay suggested by Crazy Joe can be nice to check them realtime while playing, without having to alt-tab to check an external software like HWinfo). Then based on if those temps are effectively higher than they should, we might need additional info about your build on the whole.
