GPU Question...

The machine I have at the moment (i7 7700,16GB,1060 3GB) runs the game at an acceptable performance level for me. Especially if I turn options down. I have fun playing the game on the CV-1, but wonder if a 1070 card would enhance the visuals enough to justify upgrading right now. I actually just got started playing ED as an older person getting back into PC games. I have no problem forking out some cash for a better card than the 1060 3GB, but it can run very smooth with the Asynchronus effect. I do long for some sharper graphics with the Rift though. Anyone care to advise?

I'd say go for it. The more you have under the hood, the more you can tighten things up. Be aware though that it's a slippery slope! Once you start... :p

That CPU with a 1080 is amazing. I know it's a big jump and not what you asked about, I'm sorry for that, but I'd say if you're going to upgrade the video card then sell the old one and one of your kids, aim for a 1080. I thought I ran the game well until I was able to run it without reprojection kicking in, and damn.... worth it

An important note is that VR uses more than 4 GBs of ram, so any card with more than 4 GB could show an improvement. And 1070 is an excellent card. VR needs all the power you can throw at it. I've got a 1080, but I'm still far from my dream settings of SS: 1 and HMD-Q: 2. Maybe next gen...

mp4x,

Silky smooth is what I like. You are convincing me lol.

Heh, and that's probably unfair of me. I had to wait until I could get a bit of overtime to be able to buy mine. I really dig VR and I want to make it run the best I reasonably can, so for me the effort was worth it.

I'm with the 1080 crowd. Spend once, do it right.

Get a 1080Ti if youcan stretch...

Z...

I agree with that. I have a 1080 sc (factory OC, goes to like 1950MHz normally), I'm fine with it, and if I were buying today instead, I would go 1080 Ti.

It's not that I think the 1070 is a bad choice for the money (probably quite good), it's that you already have a 1060 and can already play it. If you're going to upgrade, upgrade.

I run a heavily overclocked 1080 with 1.5 Oculus SS and VR Low with a few custom tweaks yet ASW kicks in all the time.

Fortunately ASW works pretty well in Elite so i get an immersive, mostly smooth experience with solid eye candy.

Its worth having the extra horsepower to be able to run the Oculus SS as high as possible - it makes the biggest difference to the visuals.

Grrrr... this is making me want to get a 1080 now! Are the visual improvements really that noticeable?

I have a 1070 in my laptop and a 1080 in one of my desktops. Both work fine and there's not much further you can push the tech ATM. That said, those 1080ti cards are looking very tempting and I might switch out my rig with the 980ti in it for one of those. We are talking small margin gains past a 1070 in my opinion though.

I think the 1070 was designed to have 25% less performance than a 1080. It's actually a nerfed 1080, the same chip with parts destroyed so they can sell an item at a lower price point.

I would rather they make more 1080s and price them a bit lower, but I'm not a horrible public corporation who "knows best" for the shareholders. They all do, even when they go bankrupt and the stock zeros. They have suits. /rant

I haven't tested it extensively but it sounds about right. OP won't go wrong with anything upwards of a 1070 IMO

In the past chip manufacturers always aimed to make the best chips they could. They then put them through extensive testing. When they found what speeds a chip RELIABLY ran at they locked and marketed it at that specification. It is cheaper (and more cost effective) to have one set of tooling, than several sets.

Something that people do not always realise is how much it costs to build a Chip Fabrication Plant. Prices start at $1billion, and regularly hit $3 - $4 billion (they have hit $9.3 billion);

If you're going to take the jump do it properly.

I wouldn't fork out on a 1070 with a 1060 already installed unless I was going to bridge, and that's rough waters as VR doesn't officially support SLI.

I upgraded to a 1070 and IMO its a good base card for VR. Having checked the benchmarks for 1070 and 1080, think the 1070 is better value for money ATM. The 1080 only gives a marginal increase in performance over the 1070 so not worth the extra money. The 1080 ti is a different story. It will give a significant performance increase over the 1070 and 1080. So my recommendation is get a 1070 for now because you can pick them up for a few hundred bucks. Leapfrog the 1080 and then upgrade to a 1080 ti when they drop in price (probably 12 - 18 months time).

See, this is the voice of reason! Honestly I think I only want to spend a few hundred on the upgrade, and hopefully sell the 1060 for whatever it is worth. I spent $1K on the rig plus $500 for the Rift and $500 for a 144hz monitor. I think I may exchange the monitor for a 1070 and a cheaper display since I don't intend to play much else except for ED in VR.

Really looking forward to seeing some more clarity out of the Oculus!
