"Grainy" Effect on Planets - Advice Please

First, my apologies if this is in the wrong place. Mods, please feel free to move it to a more suitable area.

I am a seasoned Elite console player, having played ED since it was launched on PS and then XBox. However, due to Odyssey no longer coming to consoles, and, as I understand it, no further progress being made there, I have switched to Steam.

I have a nVidia RTX 2060 GPU (driver 512.15), with an i9-10900K CPU and 32GB 3600 DDR4 RAM.

I am getting very good frame rates on HIGH settings, and the game looks great.

But, I do have one puzzling issue and that is when I look at a planet's surface, especially as I am approaching it from space, the terrain looks very "grainy". I am not sure how to explain it other than saying it looks grainy. The anti-alias seems to be working well, as there are no jagged edges. It's just the planet's surface. It improves somewhat when I land and get out of my ship either on foot or in SRV.

I am curious as to what the grainy effect is and what graphic setting you can recommend I look at to adjust and experiment with.

Many thanks, and again my apologies for being so vague (and for possibly posting this in the wrong place).

If you can, take a few screenshots and add to your thread mate. Not complaining at you btw - I just think it'll help people understand better, as there have been some threads over the last few months around similar things to your description, so these people will hopefully know a lot more than me!

You are absolutely right, Father Jack, sorry, Bottom Hat ;) It would have been better had I attached screenshots. I have done so now. Two show my settings, and the other the screenshot. It's very difficult to see in the screenshot what I am talking about, but it's in the centre of the screen, around the mouse widget dot. Another way I can liken it is when you see somebody on TV with a stripy tie, you sometimes get that weird effect, I think it's called moire pattern, but it's not so severe in the game, just a mild form of it.

My monitor is an ASUS VG248QE 24" 3D 144Hz GAMING DISPLAY

Alec Turner: I found the checkerboard option, but it did not fix it. Thank you for the suggestion anyway. (y)

I should add, the strange graphical effect I am seeing only occurs when I move around. If I stay still the effect does not show, and it's only when looking at planet surfaces.

It’s just poor anti-aliasing on certain planets. I see it now and then, too. Some planets are very bad, but most are pretty good. The bad ones are terrible, though. It has improved since EDO launch but still exists.

Yes, that was something that crossed my mind. I have tried using various AA settings in-game, but it didn't really seem to do much. I tried matching the refresh rate setting in-game to that of my monitor. Monitor is 144Mhz and the game setting was at 60Mhz. So I set game setting to 144Mhz, but that didn't help either. I am getting FPS of about 100+ in space, according to the Steam fps counter, so I can't complain really.

As Codger points out (and ruling out that checkerboard setting Alec mentioned), it's really just down to a very subpar AA implementation. Only way to alleviate the issue would be to use Supersampling above 1.0x (at least 1.50x ideally), or enable DSR from the Nvidia settings and have the game rendered at a higher resolution than the display output (that's what I'm doing at the moment, playing at 2560x1440 on my 1080p display). Both options have a huge impact on performances though, so there's really no ideal solution until FDev eventually gets around to implement some proper AA solution.

Lol - glad it helped and I really didn't mean to come across like a pita-suggestion maker! I just wanted people who have seen it to help out buddy :)

I should have thought to include the screenshots in the beginning. You were absolutely right to suggest doing so. I appreciate the help and advice you gave me. Have a DRINK! on me. :)

No need to thank me mate, but Jack is stirring from his slumber so I had better have a bottle ready for him!

I have experienced this grainy-ness myself after an Elite update. Make sure to turn off AMD FSR. The issue comes from up-sampling.

Nothing you can do. It's a "feature" of EDO. I'm not sure where it comes from, but EDO have AA and LOD issues, and they could be both related. Or perhaps it's related to the "stair" glitch effect. Or something else.

Not related. I don't use upsampling and AMD FSR and I have the thing. I tried many settings none worked.

The only solution appears to be to set SS to at least 1.5, even 2 if your gpu can handle it.
