Graphic Card Prices

I'm running a Rift with a GTX970, and to get decent visuals I'm sacrificing a lot in performance. I'm aware I need an upgrade, but with the Pimax 8k looming in, and a possible announcement from Nvidia, I have been pushing it back. Now I read somewhere that bitcoin mining is increasing graphic card prices substantially, and it has scared me quite a bit.

Checking some international pages, I can find per example the Asus Rog Strix GTX1080Ti OC for around 1.500 USD, which seems quite crazy when I could get it today here in Spain for 919 Euro. I'm now scared of waiting in case prices continue to rise and cards become un-payable, and I'm considering if I should just purchase this option here in Spain right now, or if I should risk it and wait to see what happens. Any recommendations?

The goal here though is that anything I purchase should be able to handle the Pimax, so I don't want to end under powered for not waiting...

I would hold off until volta cards hit the market. At least then 1080s prices could drop. Also theres a chance the bitcoin market crashes, but I think its a gamble. Realistically I dont see the prices dropping soon, perhaps towards october-november we may see some good deals. I would wait if you can. Also I am not sure how pimax 8k will be handled by current tech or if it will work well at all. If you waited this long, I would wait a bit more as it seems this is the worse time to buy.

I'm not sure GPU prices will actually drop any time soon.

I just sold a pack of ancient R9 290's for more than double their original price.

Just wait it out. Not much of a choice. If your willing to pay a lot , go straight to nvidia and get a titan.

Card prices have be all over the place due to coin-miners.

It;s like DDR4 memory.. the price of that right now is utterly staggering.

Maybe just hold off a month or two for prices to calm down again.

I doubt very much that nvidia will announce or release any new cards until Computex and this seems to be the general consensus of the people in the media that know what they are talking about and sometimes get "hints" from their sources. After all they have no real reason to. Bear in mind that when the new generation of cards come out they will cost silly money and it will take many months for the prices to drop (particularly if mining is still keeping costs high), assuming stock is available. If you have the money and can justify the cost then buy now, otherwise you may be waiting forever.

On the plus side, when Bitcoin does crash, or miners just can't make enough to keep their mines running, the market will get flooded with second had 1080Tis and we'll be picking them up for peanuts!

Well, it's gone up 20€ already since yesterday to 939€... Really on the fence on what to do, as I'm not sure I'm going to be getting much of a visual upgrade on the Rift right now, apart of a huge performance increase, of course.

I am in the boat as you. I can probably sell my AMD Fury card for about £4-500 which is somewhat more then what I paid for it. But the big issue is that I can't find anything to replace it with at a reasonable price.

I do have a spare card but that is just an AMD 270X.

Decisions, decisions.

Prices are out of control.

I sold my 980ti for $50 more than I paid for it 2 years ago. The only other piece of technology I've had that happen for is the DK2, where I sold it for same price I had paid a year and a half prior.

Yes, I've had concerns about this too. It's one of the reasons I haven't been too perturbed by the Pimax 8K delay. I have been planning to buy a next-gen card "1180Ti" whenever it becomes available later this year. My 980Ti is good enough for now and I don't think the 1080Ti will really be able to power an 8K at the quality settings I want to use. My fear is that the price will be so high that my wife will nix my purchase.

Ebuyer.com are selling GPU's 1 at a time. They have all the Nvidia family (1050, 1060, 1070 and 1080's and Ti versions as well) in stock now and prices are......... well in line with the current trend! but at least they have them.

I agree with this.

There have been credible reports that the rapid increase in crypto currencies prices (particularly bitcoin) has caused the run on high end graphics cards. Retailers have been taking advantage of this, in some cases almost doubling the price of cards. Got to the point that Nvidia publically stated retailers should keep stock for gamers (really just a PR exercise). Crypto currencies took a big tumble last month when governments started talking about regulating them. This will likely happen because crypto currencies bypass the banking and taxation systems altogether ATM. If this trend continues bit coin mining will fall away significantly. Personally, if you're not in a hurry, keep an eye on what happens to crypto currencies and Ebay over the next few months. :)

P.S. Interesting trivia - Bit coin mining is not a "green" industry. The total electricity consumed by bit coin mining is now more than used by some countries.

This whole bitcoin craziness is not just affecting the "high end" of the market. Try and find even a GTX 1060 and you would be shocked what they are asking for it.

Bitcoin mining is not the only thing causing the price rise. The other reason is the vultures buying up the cards as fast as they can and heading to Ebay. Now I am all for free market and capitalism. But this is like price gouging on essentials (bottled water, gas, etc.) during a crisis.

And yes, I realize the gaming card gouging/shortage is not a crisis. It's an analogy.

I was eyeing up an MSI 1070ti for £470 just before Black Friday. Black Friday came and went without price drop.
Cyber Monday however, Scan knocked £50 off down to £420. I'll have that thank you very much!

Two months later and the same card from the same place is now £630!!!

I know how you feel. I was looking at a Palit 1080ti. I now have the money, but the price has gone through the roof, so I will have to wait it out.
