Horizons Graphics issues in planets

I really waited they would improve planetary rendering in this point update. FD said that they continue improving planetary stuff in point releases but this was not much.

Ditto! I too had pined my hopes on the .03 update giving us our 2.0 terrain maps back!

Instead we end up with a totally broken Docking Computer along with a totally broken Turret Weapon Mode control that refuses to obey/save the user's setting choice! How could a project manager not notice such glaring screw ups, allow the update to go out to the community with all these BROKEN features, and then, when the community discovers these obvious problems within an hour of the release, say nothing about it to the community, and make no urgent effort to get a patch released within the next 48 hours or less?

I have no words, and definitely no answer for the above, but whatever the cause, we are all STUCK with the aftermath, and as of yet, no relief in sight! [down]

I really can't recall ever owning a video game where pretty much each and every update breaks a fully functioning major feature or game component that had nothing to do with the focus of that specific update!

Forces me to seriously question whether those in charge of managing these projects have the slightest clue as to what they are doing! [???]

I had a little pause playing Elite and yesterday I was landing to a planet and wondered how the surface looked so bad compared how it used to be.
Thought I had some problem with the installation/settings, but "nice" to know this is a bug in the game. Has FD commented this yet? I suppose someone made a ticket about this.

I hate to be that pessimistic, but I highly suspect a downgrade in disguise. That's what they called the planet optimizations. No miracles here, if it turned out to be smoother during engineers test sessions, textures are gone, thus easier to load! and they even proudly announced it on livestreams...

Regarding my personal experience, I play quite smoothly on a crappy config with everything on low. But planets looked far better than they do now on low, and things are not smoother. Planetary settlements and raids are even more jittery than before.
Yet again, my machine is crappy. But if you all have the same problem with good configs.. Even OA... That seems like a bad move. And no real, clear communication whatsoever about that...

Some of it is not as good, such as distance rendering, but the closeup planet surfaces are much better in my opinion.
The distance rendereing looks better for me though after the last patch.

Yes, it looks better even for me. But before we can land, we all have to suffer through the smudged graphics during descent / glide / high altitude flight which break immersion a bit... And hopes, as I can't believe how it remained unnoticed/considered unimportant during test sessions.

I don't have any problem with the GLIDE feature. I think its kind of cool. Kind of like re-entering an atmosphere even though these planets don't have one! Still, planets in these size ranges could have a very thin veil of gas surrounding them. There would be enough to cause some resistance on entry.

The thing that bugs the heck out of me is the STUPID PAUSE between the Orbital Cruise Mode and the Glide Mode. That is what breaks the immersion for me! The motion of your ship totally stops dead during this pause, and that definitely breaks the immersion for me!

Was that what you were actually referring to? If so, totally agree with that, but I enjoy the GLIDE mode myself.

Oh, I've not been very clear I reckon, might have to edit my post. Nope, I'm also really fond of the glide feature (and all the crack noises). And I REALLY dislike the pause too, but I think it cannot be changed for technical reasons.

No, I meant that the rendering problems at high altitude, during glide and after (until you reach approximately 100 meters of altitude) really kills immersion. The lack of textures, the smudged surface. That's something that was much crisper before 2.1... And flying above planet surface is a huge part of them. Considering you have to be high above the ground to see POI on the radar... Ultimately, explorers looking for nice vistas could be somewhat disappointed with these technical difficulties...

Oh! In that case... I agree 100%! :)

While they somewhat brought back the higher terrain quality from 2.0 (WHY did they remove it in the first place?) I too hate the BLURRY texture maps we get served to us during the decent stage. Seems to me they are trying to push the time the orbit textures get used, and these simply don't have the resolution to maintain sharper detail when they are zoomed so far in on! We need ANOTHER SET of terrain maps for that point and this would remove that BLURRY period we all hate with a passion!

This wasn't there in 2.0, so there is no reason why they can't add in another set of maps like we had before!

I should also mention that I have my game installed on my system drive, which is a 512GB Samsung 950 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD! If you are familiar with that drive, you will know it has INSANE READ and WRITE speeds! If that pause has anything to do with texture map loads on our end, then there is surely something royally screwed up! I just don't have load times on my rig using that awesome drive for my system and my most played games!

If you play solo or in an area with no other commanders there shouldn't be a pause. The pause is only there to sync other commanders ships with yours. People seem to think its a loading screen, but it isn't, its a syncing screen.
