gravity meta thread

Just had a thought small ship are now for the win large planet equals large gravity well equals more attraction equals small ship will RULE.

Bigger planet means more chance of more resources

How do you think this will effect the current bigger is normally better space meta?

I think that you're thinking about this a little too hard. We already have handwavium engines, this isn't KSP. We can spend dozens of hours flying in random directions in an Asp before running out of fuel, the differences in fuel cost for orbital escape will be largely ignored.

Heavy ships will handle badly we already know this nothing about fuel all about large ships having to move quickly or the flight model messes up combat in gravity well will be a very different affair

Well, large ships generally have a lower acceleration than small ones. A lot of the 100% metal Chtonian worlds have several Earth-masses, so I think there will be occasions where you would need a nimble ship to access surface resources.
In FE2/FFE, there were planets where you ran the risk of being stranded, or crashing, because the gravitational acceleration was higher than that of your vertical thrusters.

But then on the other hand, ships like the Anaconda are going to be able to carry smaller ships!

Err... Horizons is all about landing on planets; no one said anything about getting back off of them again. Probably another expansion?

Logically, each planet has a different gravity, therefore each case will be different, therefore, caution may be required.

And just how much combat do you think is going to be on planet surfaces? Let's say for the first year or so.

I'm just going to throw a number out there, but it's probably pretty accurate. Mayyyybeeeeee.... Next to nil?

If you mean the first season, this is what we know:

SRV's are armed.
There are situations where SRV's and ships fight in unison.
There are most likely going to be situations where SRV's and/or ships fight SRV's and/or ships.
There are ground complexes with weaponry.
There are missions to destroy ground targets.

And that's all that need be said. Canned content in missions will never require any "change in the meta". They will always devolve into stacking SCB's and plugging away until you're done, then spending more time flying back to the station to collect your reward than you did running the mission.

Don't expect to see much PvP on planet surfaces until the mechanics are well fleshed out.

PP objective to attack a massive complex along with other ship, someone else to defend it, that is massive right there, as long there are mission PP/merc anywhere they will attract you into combat, I mean think about it most battles take place where stuff is even if that's a route to where people want to get the actual chance of space battles as we have seen them should be low,

either way winders win condas lose

its all about the base

Eh. You said that there was most likely not going to be any combat for the first year.

Well, I do agree with you. There's a lot more that's going to have to change if all of this is going to work well. Fixing the tumour that is SCB's and making missions work (a lot) better than currently is always a good start.

The David Braben one?

No I've been looking for it, apologies if it's really obvious but do you have a link?
