But no, Perseus, it should not. Is essential is to having bought Frontier. And also to be a Kickstarter backers. It redeems all the sins of youth.
BBC Elite was my first encounter with Elite on a friends machine.
Spectrum is a close 2nd as I owned that one.
Frontier and it's incarnations were dire ... terrible handling. Newtonian is great in theory, shocking in practice
This is exactly my experience of Elite, I feel exactly the same ... I voted for the spectrum versions as that is the platform I played most.
Although, I have played (and enjoyed) Elite on pretty much every platform .. Playing Oolite now (modded up to the teeth!)

The BBC B was the one that started it for me, tried the later incarnations of Frontier and FE and like you hated the handling. Thought the game had regressed when it seemed all I had to do was buy a big ship and ram everything in combat to win.
