Greeting other CMDRS

I've missed a bunch of 'hi's and 'hello's to landing approach, and when landed, sender's a goner. And when interdicted, well, I don't stop to chat - I fire (regardless if it's player, NPC pirate, or security vessel).

I'm a "Hi Cmdr" kind of guy. I've had quite a few response, but understand that sometimes its a newbie, and its a bit like when you first learned to drive, too many pedals, knobs and switches and too much going on around you. I've also missed responding to the odd person when I've been up to my eyes in ASP! Sorry (Cmdr Melnik! - especially if it was you I strafed, just after ignoring you :))

I remember someone wishing me good luck some months ago, shortly after I'd left a station. I did reply, but I had to make it short as my FSD was just about charged.
I don't open many chats though.

Right now I'm out in the middle of nowhere exploring things, so I don't think I'm going to bump into anyone for a while.

I've been having trouble replying to people who said hello before. Yesterday I decided to bind the 'quick comms' command to the R key for 'reply'. Now I hope that will improve my answering skills.
I got rid of 'rotational correction' altogether because in 6 months I haven't used it once.

The communications really, really need work. There has been countless times when I've not had a chance to reply to a greeting because simply i sometimes don't have the time to. A simple 'quick reply' like /r (pretty much the standard in online games) would make life a whole lot easier. I haven't had the chance to test out voice comms yet, my mic is faulty. Of all the things that need work, comms is the biggest for me personally.

I've also, targeted Cmdrs and sent the standard 'greetings' and i'd say a good 90% never respond, either they don't know how to (like myself a day or so ago) or they simply have too much going on to reply.

Since playing in open (from a few days ago) I always try and say hello to fellow commanders. Got a few replies so far, whic is nice.

I suspect that everybody is right - there are several reasons why you don't get a response. Paranoia, which is fair enough - this is Elite Dangerous right? Also, as a pilot, SC'ing does keep you fairly busy if you want to have a quick and efficient journey (and who doesn't want that, really). And of course the difficulty of interrupting your thought processes to figure out how to work the darn comms system - I'm sure it will become easier as we all get to practice it but right now it is confusing - it takes time to locate and target and so on.

Anyway, I hope that everybody keeps trying and doesn't just give up in frustration. It's nice to see a greeting even if we are unable to respond, for whatever reason. For myself, I have yet to be able to successfully respond - not for lack of trying but usually because I just haven't been quick enough to get to it before some other urgent attention is needed elsewhere - or the other Cmdr shoots off.

I consider SC a hostile area, which means that I try to concentrate on getting to my destination ASAP, which means I usually miss/not dare to respond other commanders' greetings. Once I get to the station I'm in a hurry to land, so I usually miss comms as well. If I ever notice another commander greeting me BEFORE I ask for permission to land, I try to answer.

What I would like to see is a chat room for docked commanders. That's when you know you're safe and don't have to worry about getting shot, or crashing or getting rammed.

I got a nice hello from a fellow commander tonight, saying 'hey, don't see many others round here' (which is true as I am a bit remote!)... Silver something was his name but I had to stop chatting due to being interdicted! If I could remember it I'd add him to my friends list!
Is there any way to keep a chat log on your machine????

I think the chat system needs an overhaul to make it easier respond. I got a message while flying in SC the other day and by the time I'd pressed "2", selected the commander from the list of local targets and typed my message he was out of range. I think there needs to be a better system, something like pressing "enter" to reply directly to the last person who messaged you.

Nice just to say hey! When passing but a lot of people are busy. Keep wondering what a good greeting would be to stay in character with the Elite universe.

Haven't had a response yet. But I will continue saying "Hi" to every CMDR I see. I really wish people would realise that in this game you really are meant to imagine that you are the pilot in the pilot's chair and act accordingly. Ask yourself "how would this work if I were really the pilot in the chair?". Things become far more intuitive after that...

The way it has worked for me is if I want to hail another commander then I need to find them in the comms drop down list, but if another commander has hailed me i can reply by using the quick comms option which i have mapped to enter, which makes it quick to respond

I say one of two things to people when I see them. " Prepare to be boarded and your cargo inspected" OR " They are out there waiting in the darkness, watching your every move." They either run like hell or I do the same LOL :D

Just saying hi

Hello i hope your doing ok, as i new to Elite Dangerous my self just learning how to go by using these forums set ups, these look like generic forums like other MMOS :D

Been talking to CMDRs in Beta Hydri mostly over "Federal invite" confusion.

Other than that I make sure to say 'hi' to everyone I meet... and most importantly have a positive conversation.
