Greetings!

First post, so first off hello every one!

Now, Apparently I've been living under a rock. I just found out about elite dangerous. I am a backer of SC. I know, I know, if I heard about SC I should have heard about this game, but I didn't:eek:.

Now, here is my questions about the game, and no I am not going to compare SC with this game. But I am going to compare it with another game.

1. Is this game like the Egosoft X series of games?

I LOVE space exploration and I love trading, and I love mining:D. that's why I loved the X series so much. I did try eve online and it was okay. . but I like to control my ship, not point and click. so it lost me just on that. To each there own right?

I've been watching a LOT of you tube videos and I am LOVING what I see.
If I would have found out about this I would have backed this from the beginning as well.

I love the fact that you can manually dock at the stations, but, so far I see only one type of station.

2. Are there going to be different types of stations we will see?

Reason I ask that is I love variety. But I also know that there are limits to what devs can do, so I have an open mind. If they can great, if they cant, that's ok too.

I know that walking around, atmospheric flight is going to be as DLC so I am not worried about that for now.

I have a strange set up for flying my DCS choppers (gotta love the Mi-8mtv2!!) What I have is a Logitech steering wheel that I use the gas and brake for rudders, and I also have a saitek pro flight controller (I use the yoke only for FSX though) and I usually use the throttle quadrant for the throttles etc, and lastly I have a Logitech extreme 3D pro.

3. Can I assign all those devices to set it up as I do my flight sims that way I have different inputs for my X,Y & Z rotations and the power management for X(forward) and Z(up/down) and perhaps Y(side to side)?

I also have track IR 5 but I see from the videos that is a feature that has been added, I think ALL games should have Track IR incorporated. *shrugs*

4. When did beta begin?
5. How much have I missed of the current beta phase?
6. Is it considered open beta or a closed beta or just. . beta?
7. Am I asking to many questions?

I am thinking about getting this game. how soon? Tomorrow! The one game I remember and I LOVED was free space 2. played all the star wars games they to me where eh. . but Free Space 2. . I LOVED that game. As I said never played elite 1,2, or 3(?) so don't know about the back ground. . . oh yea reminds me of my last question!

8. will the story in Elite: Dangerous build on the past stories of the older versions of Elite, another words will I under stand what going on if I didn't play the others?

Reason I ask is if you didn't get in on the first X game, you was totally lost!

I shall shut up now. I probably either bored you or talked your eyes out. . ha! get it!. . . no? *sighs*

I hope your having a good day!
Xendoshi.

Welcome commander :)

Here's a FAQ, poorly written, and a real mess, but that still has some nice information on the game, and at least, plenty sourced: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite:_Dangerous_FAQ

Still, for some quick replies:

It's not like X, more like Freelancer, there are many stations, it works with HOTAS, sticks, rudders, controllers, TrackIR, Oculus Rift, whatever you want, beta began a week ago, you haven't missed much, it's a beta you need to pay to enter so it's neither open (implying everyone), nor closed (meaning selections), and yes you're asking too many questions ;)

The story is kind of a "side thing" in Elite games, you won't miss much anyway if you start with Elite: Dangerous. It's an open world sandbox, so obviously it's a different kind of story, one pretty loose, that you don't need to follow closely.

I guess you could read this old novel from the first game in 1984: http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/dkwheel.htm
It does a great job of presenting the universe, but it's by no means a mandatory reading :)

1. Is this game like the Egosoft X series of games?

Only that its set in space, and as far as I can tell the only biggest thing X games will have is the ability to create space stations etc. Right now, even in beta state Elite is arguably the best space game released in over a decade...Imho :).

Elite will allow you to own multiple ships, but it tries to be as fun and as realistic as possible, so if you want to swap ships you'll either need to fly to where its located and swap, or have it delivered.

2. Are there going to be different types of stations we will see?

So far we've seen two basic designs:

Coriolis:
Coriolis_station.jpg

Orbis:
Orbis_station.jpg

Each is modulised, so we have seen different structures for the Orbis already, even different levels of luxury inside:

I have my CH Pro throttle, rudders and stick all setup for different functions with no issue, YMMV.

I also have track IR 5 but I see from the videos that is a feature that has been added, I think ALL games should have Track IR incorporated. *shrugs*

TrackIR has been natively in for Elite since Alpha 4.

4. When did beta begin?
29th of July, late at night night UK time :).
5. How much have I missed of the current beta phase?
About a week
6. Is it considered open beta or a closed beta or just. . beta?
Just Beta, Beta phase 1. Don' know how many phases, but each phase will bring in more features and content.
7. Am I asking to many questions?

No

8. will the story in Elite: Dangerous build on the past stories of the older versions of Elite, another words will I under stand what going on if I didn't play the others?

It is set a number of years after the last games, but not knowing will not matter, however I do recommend checking out the Elite Fiction, really great books that set the atmosphere.

Like this one for http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Reclamation-Dangerous-Drew-Wagar-ebook/dp/B00KUY2MX4/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407286156&sr=1-5&keywords=elite+dangerous

Also, check the Newsletter archives

I hope your having a good day!
Xendoshi.

Likewise! I fly flightsims too, only thing to be aware of is the yaw is dampened, however despite this I still find it good enough for tracking purposes, in fact I'd say its just right :).

I will answer question 7 first: To some extent, yes :p

anyway, before even answering any questions, Are you ready to accept that you might lose what you have earned just because of a bug?

We have many players, even myself, losing what we worked hard for because of a game bug, mistake and maybe players.

If you are fine, continue to read on, else wait for the release.

1. Never played that game so I am not really sure. But from your description, you might like it, though mining does not seem to be implemented yet.

2. From pictures I have seen, yes. But from the few places I travelled to are still cube-like starports.

3. I believe so. I have assigned my game to use my combatstick, pro throttle and keyboard.
I am using TrackIR 5 as well :D

4. last week 29th July BST.

5. Well, if there is anything you miss, I believe it would be bugs, with new bugs. Can't blame the devs since this is still beta and they are still adding new features while solving bugs.

6. closed, since you have to pay after all. I doubt elite dangerous have open beta though. which some people might complain as they wont want to pay to test a game after all.

8. As of now, I didn't play the previous games but I also don't recall anything about the lore in the current game. Might be due to beta but at least the game doesn't seem to have a story right now, or at least in game.

The game is more sandbox like Arma 3, over rpg like guild wars 2.

hope I am not too late

Hello and welcome.

I'll try and answer some of your questions to the best of my abilities, but I don't have a deep insight into the future plans for this game. I have played a lot of the previous games however so I kind of know what to expect.

1: Hard question. I guess obviously in some ways it is since they are both space sims, but in a lot of other ways it isn't. I have played X3 though and I think I could say with some certainty that if you like that then you'll like this game.

2: There already are different station types. The Coriolis type station that you have most likely already seen seem to be the industry standard however. They do come in small variations however. I'll let you discover the others by yourself ingame. They are quite stunning the first time you lay eyes on them.

3: Nice to see another DCS nut here. I'm more of a Black Shark jock than Mi-8 though. I'm using my full flight sim setup in Elite and it works great. I see no reason why yours shouldn't as well, but don't take my word for it.

4, 5 and 6: This beta period has only been active for a week or so as far as I know. There have been closed alpha and beta periods before this, but there was a wipe before this period so you only missed a couple days. I guess this would be considered an open beta since anyone can just buy into it.

7: Yes. :)

8: I'm pretty sure you don't have to have played the previous games in order to have a general understanding of what's going on. It does help for nostalgic reasons though. It's not really one of the overly complex for the sake of being complex space operas.

1. Is this game like the Egosoft X series of games?
I have only played two of the X Series, but so far, there are differences. In E: D there are no sectors that are connected by gates. You can jump from star system to star system as long as they are in reach. And different ships have different ranges.
Also you will not be able to place fabrication plants, or manage fleets. Elite: Dangerous is One Man And His Ship (or one Woman And Her Ship, depending on what gender your identify yourself).
And while there will be an ongoing narrative (I hope) going on, you wont be automatically be the hero.

2. Are there going to be different types of stations we will see?
There are already several stations in the game. The good old Coriolis, then various variants of an Orbis station and something that looks like an Orbis, just without the rings. The docking cylinder, however, is more or less the same throughout the game, but that might change.

3. Can I assign all those devices to set it up as I do my flight sims that way I have different inputs for my X,Y & Z rotations and the power management for X(forward) and Z(up/down) and perhaps Y(side to side)?
I think right now E: D has troubles recognizing more than one control interface. But I can be wrong about that.

4. When did beta begin?
Standard Beta begun on July 29th, so about a week ago. Premium Beta a few months ago. Alpha begun last year. Frontier is not doing the traditional beta with "let's release an almost finished game and test it", they are expanding on what they have. Alpha 1 was a handful of single player missions, Alpha 2 was a handful of online multiplayer missions. Alpha 3, bound the multiplayer missions together and gave one space station. Alpha 4 increased the number of systems and stations to 5. Premium Beta was just a renamed Alpha 4. PB 2 increased the stations to 8 and now with Beta 1 we have about 50 star systems, various stations and fuel consumption.

5. How much have I missed of the current beta phase?
About a week and two patches.

6. Is it considered open beta or a closed beta or just. . beta?
It's... paid Beta. Alpha, Premium Beta and Standard Beta are aimed at people who know they want this game, and who agree that they will help the developers with more money than just for the main game. But they also know they will shape the game and help with creating it. It's less preview rather than a badge of honor.

7. Am I asking to many questions?
My 7 year old son is worse.

8. will the story in Elite: Dangerous build on the past stories of the older versions of Elite, another words will I under stand what going on if I didn't play the others?

Right now, I think we don't even know how deep the narrative in the game will be. But so far, I would say a newcomer should understand it as well, and there are quite a few Elite novels out that help with the background.

I think right now E: D has troubles recognizing more than one control interface. But I can be wrong about that.

Just a friendly FYI, it was addressed in Alpha 3x, multiple controllers should not be an issue, although a really weird setup, who knows :).

Hey folks thanks for the replies!

I was kind of in a hurry when I typed out all those answers.
As far as compairing it to the X series I was thinking along the lines of the trading. It looks the same from the videos I have seen.

Also:

anyway, before even answering any questions, Are you ready to accept that you might lose what you have earned just because of a bug?

The answer is:

I have been doing beta and alpha testing dating back to 2002.
Tested on games such as SWG, EQ2, Tabula Rasa and quite a few others, but those are my favorites. I enjoy testing things and trying to replicate any bugs I find, then be able to report them so as to get them fixed.

So yes I am willing to lose everything from bugs to server wipes :D

Nice to see another DCS nut here. I'm more of a Black Shark jock than Mi-8 though.

Oh I love the ka-50 as well, As of yet I have yet to use the auto hover function! But that brings me to another question. . .

If the yaw is dampened does that mean we cant do a funnel maneuver? I think even in space it could be done. or has it not been tried?

Well everyone, Thank you for the answers, I am definitely going to be getting Elite tomorrow!

How big is the download? I am guessing 20 gig? that seems to be the norm.

First post, so first off hello every one!

Greetings! And welcome!

1. Is this game like the Egosoft X series of games?

Should be the other way around - Elite *is* the grand-daddy of all space sims following it :D But seriously, nope. Elite is about you, lone pilot, living hand-to-mouth. X is about you becoming a magnate, or an admiral controlling fleets of ships or owning numerous factories. No boarding of capital ships here! No flyable capital ships too.

2. Are there going to be different types of stations we will see?

As others have said before me, right now there are just 2 types, but I'm sure more will be added as the beta goes on. From the old days, I remember the Dodohedron type, which has not made its appearance in this game yet. It's sorta like the Coriolis station, just "rounder".

3. Can I assign all those devices to set it up as I do my flight sims that way I have different inputs for my X,Y & Z rotations and the power management for X(forward) and Z(up/down) and perhaps Y(side to side)?

If you rebind them and the game recognises your buttons, yes. Any axis on your devices can be mapped to any valid axis in the game, all up to you. As long as the game detects the device and recognises it, you can map it.

4. When did beta begin?

Everyone else will tell you 29th July 2104 but for me it was already early hours of 30th July when it started :)

5. How much have I missed of the current beta phase?

Exactly 1 week.

6. Is it considered open beta or a closed beta or just. . beta?

Technically it should be "closed beta" I guess. Only people who bought it can play it. It's not like "Open beta" where you download the client for free and play it.

7. Am I asking to many questions?

Only if you didn't breathe in between questions :)

Yo dude

I am a member of a group called Hyperion, we got our own forum and facebookpages and have a community of about 200 online gamers... About 30 of them are playing elite dangerous, we have about 6-15 people on teamspeak everynight, talking about the game and telling jokes.

We would like to meet new people like you, that play elite, so please feel free to pop onto our TS: 85.236.100.188:14607
