Newcomer / Intro Grinding Out A Combat Ship AKA Somebody Please Kill Me

I don't even need anything from this A-Ho but I've been flying all over the galaxy to check his boxes. Finally got everything I need for Bent....I mean Qwent. When I access the guy he only works on modules that I've already maxxed out. He only does power plants and distributors both of which I've already jumped through hoops on. I'm pretty sure that if I use this guy it will overwrite and demolish what's already been engineered.

I've got get this jag to level 3.3 so I can access the engineer that I'm REALLY after.

Somebody please either:

A. tell me not to worry because there is an easy workaround.

OR

B. Find me and KILL ME.

Don’t worry is the correct answer as long as you aren’t broke or out of materials.

The second option is too much trouble, if you want that just head to one of the well known ganking spots and look as if you don’t want a fight.

As an aside, I really think the new layout of the engineers page on Inara is a huge step backwards in functionality, no chains on the main screen and the engineers listed in alphabetical order of their first name or rank.

You can get chains with a bit of clicking - you want the Engineer Unlocks tab https://inara.cz/elite/engineers/#tab_engineersunlocks (I had to do a bit of clicking to find that earlier, as you say the other view was very useful)

I really like the new layout; in fact it is way better structured than before in my opinion. You only need the unlock chain when you, well, unlock the engineers. Which I'm finished with. For me, the alphabetical listing is much more useful, because most of the time I just want to look up something specific about a specific engineer, and finding the on the legacy page always was annoying. In the overhauled Inara you get both, and the unlock page is much more logically structured.

OK now @Factabulous has pointed the unlock chain tab out I am much less disappointed in the layout, however an alphabetical listing that keys off The and Colonel still seems wrong to me.

Well, if you would take the trouble to simply look at what the guy engineers then you'd not have that problem, would you?

And you have to unlock him anyway because he will link you to another engineer later.

Just to put some insight why the engineers list was changed on Inara - it simply didn't scale well for various screen resolutions and also people had a problem to orientate in it often. Thus there was an extra unlock list with details and more clear structure made and the list of engineers is in alphabetical order for easier scanning (basically as Helmut described before). :)

I just figured it out.

I bring another ship. Engineer something on this "throw away" to over level 3.3.

Then switch bak to my "hero" ship and move onwards to the engineer I was after in the first place.
Nicely done (y)

You can also just buy a 'throwaway' module (engineers often sell modules that they engineer). Then pick an upgrade you have the most mats for and engineer that throwaway module until you reach the grade you want. Or just engineer it and save for a later date.

I think the new Inara layout is a great improvement. Especially the new navigation menu makes access to pages that were deeply nested in the old design ( things like crafting lists and missing components) a breeze. People tend to <female dog> and moan when things change from the old ways, but I like it (y) .
