Engineers Grinding the Dweller

I've read on INARA that you can sell the dweller commodities and that will raise your progress with him. Problem is i've sold him a bunch of stuff and my progress hasn't gone up a single bit.

Is there something specific that the dweller wants? or is INARA just plain wrong?

Forget the trade.

Yes it's possible, but extremely tedious. I've brought him a couple of runs with 175 tones of rares at the beginning of this all. The progress is there, but WAY SLOWER than with upgrades.

You'll need only three in each grade. Go for upgrades, that's my recommendation.

Use level 1 upgrades to level up to grade 4 - takes about 60 rolls using very common mats gained from SRV or mining.

Compare all the materials and data you have against all the upgrades The Dweller offers. All you need is three upgrades at each level to get to the next level.
3 lvl 1 -> lvl 2 (3 materials)
3 lvl 2 -> lvl 3 (6 materials or data, plus 3 commodities)
3 lvl 3 -> lvl 4 (9 materials or data, plus 3 commodities)
3 lvl 4 -> lvl 5 (9 materials or data, plus 3 commodities)
So that's a total of 27 materials or data, plus 9 comodities.

When you are doing upgrades just to level up, it doesn't matter whether the upgrade is any use to you, as you will be discarding most of them.

Most of the materials and data will be common ones that you may already have plenty of. Many of the commodities can be purchased, though some may take a bit of travelling.

Yes, a slap.

You can rank with him by selling stuff but it's ridiculously slow. My advice would be pick something like sturdy pulse laser mounts, which you can mod up to level 4 without needing to collect anything that's remotely hard to find (and no mission-only crap either) stick a class 1 pulse on one of your hardpoints and just rank using that. 3 x level 1 mods gives you rank 2, 3 x level 2 mods gives you rank 3, 3 x level 3 mods gives you rank 4 and 3 x level 4 mods gives you rank 5.

You can just buy the 3 HN shock mounts you'd need for level 2; there are over 50 stations within 25Ly of his base that sell them but the closest is Hay Point in Nang Ta-khian which is 8.6Ly away. Other than that, mine a bit of osmium which is abundant in pristine metallic rings, collect some nickel which consists of landing literally anywhere and shooting the first 10 rocks you find, check the info panel in the system map for planets that you have full data for to find tungsten, molybdenum and zinc (none of which are particularly hard to obtain) and you're done. You can do that in an evening easily, you'd be lucky to do enough trade to rank to level 5 in the same time.

No but it takes 200 odd to go from g4 to g5...

I leveled up most engineers to level 4-5 using mostly only Lightweight mods. So easy to get the mats for those!

Just make a detailed shopping list before you start.

Yep I did the same for 4-5. Sometimes for 3-4 as well depending on what I had available.

as has been said, go through all of his blueprints and write down what mats you have for each level item
generally a few of the L2, L3 blueprints have buyable commodities. rolling a few L3's to get to L4 is much easier than griding trade or rolling L1's

I try to look to for a blueprint that i have/can get the bits for on each Grade. keep rolling the same item a few times and watch the rep rise

Level 1 - overcharged armor
Level 2 - kinetic res hull
Level 3 - blah blah

On a side note I have an asp which is dedicated to finding and collecting data and mats for engineering. While leveling up engineers. It keeps the best lvl 1 and 3 rolls on it even if it's just a utility ship. Waste not want not. :)

I've just redone most of the engineers in my second account. This is what I discovered by trials and with help from reading the forum:

If you've only just started with engineers, do the G1 grinding. Just take-off and land nearby, then spend an hour blasting everything on the radar and picking up every fragment. Use all the fragments to do G1 upgrades, which will take you to about G3.5, then go prospecting for another hour. That should unlock G5. That makes about 3 hours to unlock level 5 with any engineer - maybe 4 hours. Then, see what you need for the G5 mod you want, then go and get the stuff.

I only counted G1 mods for G1 and G2, which were 3 and 12. Assuming that it progresses at a fact of 4, you'd need 3 to unlock G2, 15 for G3, 63 for G4 and 255 for G5. Maybe that makes sense because in binary it would be 11, 1111, 111111, 11111111, so 255 fragments to unlock G5 - maybe!

If you've been around for a while and have loads of engineers materials of every type, then doing three of each grade by travelling to get the commodities might be quicker. You need commodities for any mods above G1. It'll take at least half an hour to go and get them. The other materials are readily available, but if you don't have them, it'll take you probably at least a couple of hours to figure out how to get them and then to actually get them while at the mercy of RNG. The G1 method is at least predictable and reliable.
