GRIP - the new Rollcage

Hey guys and gals! Do you fondly remember the futuristic battle racing game Rollcage, released in 1999 on Playstation and PC? Have you ever wondered, like I have, about how awesome it would be if the game was remade to make use of our modern hardware?

Well, we may need not wonder for much longer...

GRIP is being produced (hopefully) by two of the original Rollcage developers, and I can certainly see it in the game trailer above. I'm a little bit excited about this, though at the moment it is still in the fundraising stage on Kickstarter so there's a chance it may not happen... which would be totally unacceptable! So get your clicky fingers down to:

GRIP Kickstarter page

And throw your money at it!

...then all we need is for someone to have a proper go at a Stunt Car Racer remake...

I never played POD. Just checked it out on Youtube - it looks okay, but it's no Rollcage! If you're not familiar with Rollcage you should definitely check it out. Ah, there's nothing quite like rounding a corner at 200 mph only to discover a building falling down onto the race track ahead of you. Or sometimes on top of you...

Interestingly, I just discovered that as it is now abandonware it is available for free (get it from here) and has even been patched by one of the original creators to work better with modern systems. I haven't checked it out yet though as I suspect it may interfere with my plans to go outside today.

I don't see much mention of VR on their forums, but I haven't had a chance to delve too deeply into there yet. You're right though, that would be absolutley crazy mad fun! The original was quite disorienting enough on a regular old CRT.

I've just had a little play with the Rollcage Redux download from the link in post #3. I am now grinning like an idiot :D

I Just posted an appeal for people to pledge, and then I find this thread! Excellent :D

Eighteen days and still a long way to go. We need to plug this for all we've got!

Maybe they could even work with Frontier to tie in Horizons with on-planet racing!

...Maybe I just got a little bit overexcited there

Heh, the latest trailer that they put out on Tuesday does have at least one thing in common with Elite...

And yes, people aren't throwing enough money at this :(

I just found out about it today (thanks Kerrash!). Rollcage and Rollcage 2 are my most favourite PSX games ever! Fast paced gameplay rocks and the soundtracks for both games are spot on (if you like drum and bass :) ).

Grip looks very nice, real shame that the KS got cancelled, but luckily they went to Steam Early Access, and they are collecting money for it on their website directly now (link in a post above). I just backed it, I really encourage you to do it as well. They said if they won't meet the 10th Nov deadline for releasing the playable build, they will refund all the donations, so no risk there really. And once the playable build is released... I'm sure we'll all love it :)

Come one people, throw your money at them, let's make this happen!

Just downloaded Rollcage Redux to get me in the mood. Forgot how manic it is. I actually got pretty good at this game back in the day using just the keyboard. Nowadays I'm struggling even with a controller.

Hope Grip adds steering wheel support.

Can't wait:D

I have downloaded the private beta on Steam. And GRIP is already adrenaline pumping drum and bass speedy craziness! I am already loving it! In private beta we have 2 tracks available and only 1 model of car, there are a couple of power ups (mine, homing missile, minigun, boost). I'll record my next race and post it here for you guys to see.

Yeah, gameplay-wise it's nearly there. It rides and feel like good old Rollcage. All it needs is EMP (coming soon) and more tracks and car models. The most important thing - the driving model is there and it's spot on! There is also Arena mode, which is pretty much destruction derby and it's also great thing to play. Add multiplayer to all that and we're home :)

See that bit where you missed the tunnel entrance? That's me all the time with this game :D

I just can't get the hang of it with a keyboard and I don't have an Xbox controller :(
I really hope they expand on the controller support soon. They have said they'll be supporting steering wheels so here's hoping...

Funny though, I only ever used the keyboard in Rollcage and I got on fine with that. Must be getting old.

Oh yeah, new update this weekend and there's a second car to play with :)
