Ground-Based missions - What's the trick to them?

I am getting increasingly frustrated with missions involving taking out occupiers and scavengers at settlements. I have tried sneaking in, bombing from above, and using the SRV turret to kill enemies. While the SRV has been the most successful, I keep getting "killed".

It seems ridiculous to me that, if I am "killed" (lose consciousness or have my SRV destroyed) the mission "fails" instantly. That's not really the main point - the main point is HOW THE **** DO YOU DO THESE MISSIONS???!

Add to that the 100K credit fine when the mission fails and it is starting to become more and more beneficial to say, "forget this" and return to running Horizons-style missions.

Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love the on-foot missions and the ability to disembark and walk around, but if this is a losing proposition, then I become more and more reluctant to return to the game, instead, play a different game which presents completely different challenges.

So - what's the deal here?

A couple of things to get you started:
  • Get T2 or T3 suit/weapons
  • Sneak the first couple of kills using the power tool (illegal mode)
  • Duck and cover. use the surrounding boxes and stair wells to provide cover
  • Crouch for greater stability on the shot
  • Use height to gain advantage, they won't jetpack up
  • Some highground is unreachable by the AI (they can't flank you)
  • Lateral movement against plasma usually causes a miss (time of flight)
  • Be on the move rather than entrench. Many shots from the enemy miss for this reason alone.
  • Remember where the ammo boxes, health, and power cells are when you find them.
  • Practice in war combat zones first, where there is less pressure on you being the sole target
  • Lasers/plasma weapons against shields
  • Plasma/kinetic weapons against health
  • Use keyboard/mouse rather than the joystick...
For weapons I prefer the TK Aphelion (laser, range, hitscan), the plasma shotgun (found one with a good stability mod), and a Dominator suit.

Hope that gets you started...

ya what he said
a single item stolen will make you a hostile so rem that one
also if you shuttle around in different systems about 100 to 200 ly away from sol for eg
some bases offer g2 g3 pre modded suits and weapons (pioneer outlets)
which will improve your chances....
these are one off offers but not entirely uncommon atm if you go on say a three hour persistant sys to sys search using economical routing ;)
adding weight to bar chatter " if you shop around you can really pick up a bargain!"

ROFL - just get T2 or T3 suits. Which, require that you do the missions to get the mats to upgrade the suits. Catch 22 my friend, I quit the game for this exact reason. Ive not played as long as a lot of other people, but in the 5k or so LY worth of jumping around the bubble, not once have I seen a G3 anything anywhere. I have G2 suitsd / weapons and I get nearly insta killed in any on foot combat situation.

Or at least I did before i realized what a waste of time the game is for me and quit.

If this turns into a permanent leave, I will then clear my save.

There are unique G2/G3 items (sometimes engineered) that can be found if you're prepared to search the shops at the stations. Refresh is on Thursday morning with the maintenance patch.

i just searched systems around the edge of the bubble for a few hours, orbital and planet based bases, and now have 3 lvl3 suits, mav dom and art,and a few lvl 3 weps, its just patience and luck to find them

There's a definite learning curve. I died a lot at first, but now I hardly ever do. It's just a matter of figuring out how the NPCs act, and what you can and cannot get away with. You'll figure it out, I'm sure.

Sure, having better equipment helps, but it's quite possible to do missions with just a level 1 suit. At the beginning I even did a few "fetch" missions in my default flight suit.

Hang in there :)

Patience

Buy the plasma sniper rifle.

Scout out the site, pick a target move to a good spot shoot then run. If you hit an unshielded target they will die. Wait for the hubbub to die down then repeat.

There is a thread with people sharing where their are G3 items for sale. Basically in out of the way places. (Resets Thursdays) and there is a lot of G2 stuff out there, some G3 and the odd item with a mod as well.

Or use the SRV, but don't just sit there and let them shoot you. Move at a low speed whilst using the turret to kill them (sharp shooters priority then strikers - plasma weapons can quickly bring down your shields). If there are too many or your shields get low run away and return in a minute once they've recharged and the enemy has dispersed.

Settlement Raids are incredibly easy: arm your fave ship with dumbfire missiles. Go to target location. Hover above the site, use lateral thrusters to slide/strafe left/right/up/down until you see movement. Nuke movement with dumfire missile (1 often does the trick, 2 is common as well. The only time I've needed 3 missiles is if I had bad placement on one of the first two shots). When mission complete, leave. No need to even land. The missions usually take me about 3-4 minutes - and I am really NOT that good a player.

I assume FDEV made shooting humans on the ground with guns/lasers so difficult to prevent this sort of play - but dumbfire missiles still work like a charm. Maybe they'll nerf this at some point, but until then I am gonna enjoy it. :)

Now if you're wanting to actually do it on foot, that will give you more of a challenge, and will take longer and give you a chance to loot stuff from containers. At that point it becomes a typical first-person shooter, and standard tactics apply (use cover when you can, retreat when necessary, etc).
