Newcomer / Intro Ground Combat: Am I missing a mechanic I'm supposed to be using?

I want to make sure I understand what I'm seeing.
I did finally get the conflict zones to work.
I did NOT get the night vision to work at all.

So the ground combat has 3 weapon types plus a explody rocket.
Kinetic is supposed to be vs unshielded, lasers vs shielded and plasma is for both but individually weaker than either
And we are supposed/intended to switch between weapons every time the shields go down on a target?
Is that correct? It's seemed rather clunky and I feel like I'm missing a mechanic somewhere that I'm supposed to be using.....

How many shots are supposed to be needed to down a single target? Because I'm having to drop an entire mag per target for any given weapon.
I've tried the plasma weapons thinking they would work like the ship mounted ones do (they don't) and are quite hard to hit targets with given their projectile flight time.
The laser weapons do take shields down fairly quickly (5-8 shots) but then have to empty the rest of the mag into the target to take them down.
The kinetic weapons seem to have the fewest disadvantages as far as I can see.

What are other peoples impressions of them? And what am I missing?

Depends. Combatants have ranks and like ships the higher it is the harder it gets. Also depends on your equipment. You might be missing the trick and knowing where the ammo restocks are and reloading.

Valid point....I'm actually not sure what I'm fighting over where I am....I'll check next tound

Also; where am I supposed to legally get the ground salvage items? I know the crash sites but is there somewhere else that will give me more than 2-3 bits at a time?

Laser for shields and bullets for flesh really makes a difference
I noticed but the weapon switching to the small sidearm (or vice versa) seems very clunky as a required mechanic. I wasn't sure if I was missing something about it.
Is the system designed to be engineered before it feels more fluid?

Checked the mission board and they are pretty much all listed as Threat Leve 4.
Assuming the system works the same as for ships, that probably has something to do with my difficulty in taking them down with stock weapons

where do I look for those in the menu? Only seen the stock ones, so not sure where they would be
Same place, but they're not always there - more here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/the-great-pre-upgraded-gear-sharing-is-caring-thread.576352/

Edit: For instance I just found this sweet wep :)

That looks cool. Starting to give up on Odessey though.....:(
Had to many failed missions to DC's and zero fault tolerance missions (no retry allowed). Basically isn't turning out to be much fun :(
Which is actually kind of frustrating given the $40 I spent on it....

Yeah, it's worth checking how others are doing missions as the time to retry for yourself & try and learn is punishing. Lots of threads with info on how to do stuff (and what not to bother with). But it is another steep learning curve. And very buggy for now :(

Night vision is an engineered add on to your suit so not something you have until your suit is upgraded.

You can use any weapon at any time it is just a lot less efficient so yes you are supposed to switch which is why you carry two primary weapons plus a pistol and grenades.

I am currently rubbish at combat so have no clue how long it should take, I find the rocket launcher works well despite the small magazine capacity.

Yep. I give up. Yet another mission where I'm killed by random respawns after the mission says I killed all the targets. Right next to me.
Mission failed. Heck with this .

Only the Combat suit carries two primary weapons. The other suits that you need in order to do most anything only have the 1. Like open doors.

No, only your basic Flight suit has one weapon. The three remaining suits (that I know of) allow you to carry both primary weapon and a side arm.
But if you for some reason despise switching weapons, you can always use plasma guns. They are good against both shields and armour.

My way around that is I don’t take missions that are going to involve cutting things open if it looks likely there will be a fight. The exception being the ones to get something from a crash site where it is easy to do the fighting bit from the ship,SRV or Dominator suit then swap to the Maverick to get what you came for.

PSA pay attention to the mission details, all the Restore Prepare missions on the board yesterday where to Colonia so a 44,000Ly round trip that cannot be done using an Apex shuttle as it is out of range.
