Ground textures in VR vs 2D

Just to dribble a random thought or two on the carpet, while at it anyway: Have any of you played Skyrim in VR? -In a few places in some dungeons the level designers have added detail/depth decals to stone walls and floors, and maaaan does having those infinitely thin stencils floating a decimetre over the muddy surface below look terrible in VR... :p

...then you have something rather nice, that can be seen in both that game, and Elite: Dangerous: I wonder whether the "depth look" one can see on scatter rocks on icy bodies, is a simple matter of the objects being modelled with an inner "stone" mesh encased in an outer "clear ice" one, or whether that is a shader trick on a single shell, and where the postponed volumetric effect ice shader, falls there, as well as how much juice it guzzles... :7

The ice cliffs along the North coast in Skyrim are awesome in VR, they’re immediately what I thought of when Frontier released the short ice-planet shader upgrade videos a while back.

As for the flat surfaces, it’s another thing in the upcoming NMS VR upgrade that I’m curious to see - will the tessellation be present or will it make computers chug too much? Currently it looks like the surface plumps up in a circle around the player, perhaps 5m radius at a guess.
