Hardware & Technical GTX 1070 with i5 4460

Wondered i I could ask for some advice.

Have just upgraded graphics to Msi gtx 1070. I have this paired with a i5 4460 and 8gb ddr3 1866 RAM.

On ultra settings it runs nicely at 1080p with fps around 100 - 140. However lots of little micro stutters especially when turning the ship quickly in higher demand areas that detract from gameplay quite a bit.

Gpu usage seems to only be at 50-60% but cpu usage is often up in the high 90 percents.

Am I bottlenecking the card with this cpu or is this more likely to be an issue with ED? I know there have been lots of micro stutter issues in the past.

If I am would you recommend a 4690k or 4790? (I play planet coaster too - clearly a frontier fanboy :)

Thanks for your help in advance. Cheers.

For what it's worth, since 2.3 I get a similar thing. Although I play in VR, these stutters are new and there's no corresponding spike/dip in CPU or GPU load. Your system should be fine.

I wonder if it's a graphics driver problem

Yep, Reckon this is indeed on the software or server side. I say this as I have run Elite on my old rig (Q6600 @ 3.6ghz with gtx 760) while I rebuilt my 6700k rig last year and it was fine. IPC on a i5 4460 are way higher than a Q6600, so shouldn't be any sort of issue. My i7 6700k with gtx 1070 now microstutters when on planet surfaces since 2.3.

I've actually had a lot less stutters since 2.3, but I also switched to a Ryzen 5 1600 at the same time. FYI my CPU utilisation never goes above 40. ED appears to have some ok optimization for multiple cores.

That's why I tend not to update a satisfactory-working driver until I am sure of the compatibility version I will move to.

For example my 1070 runs on driver 376.33 with no issues (touch wood) plus I refuse to install the "experience" stuff.

I've been getting odd micro stutters too, but I use an AMD FX 8320, with 8Gb ddr3 (1600mhz), and an old AMD HD 6870.
Which is odd, because I wasn't getting then a few weeks ago. And I haven't updated any drivers, because mine are legacy now. Lol

So I doubt it's your setup, as it surpasses mine.

The CPU hitting the high 90's is almost certainly the issue here - though the 1070 has been known to be sensitive to it's drivers too, I wouldn't rule it out.

Personally I'd activate V-Sync it should reduce the load on the processor.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I do likewise and I typically I leave the experience rubbish out, too. Coincidentally/Unfortunately, this one last driver update I also chose to install The Experience so I could compare it to OBS regarding CPU and/or GPU load. This was also when ED 2.3 came out. I thought I'd get everything freshened up for 2.3, only to be left unsure which problem can be accurately attributed to which change.

Ugh.

To me, with a subpar system (GTX 760, latest Nvidia drivers, graphics preset on "mid") the stuttering has increased significantly. No other changes on my side so must be the latest update. Doesn't correspond with FPS drops btw.

If it's NOT the client, could it possibly be the latest Nvidia driver update?

Remember that your GPU isn't always going to be the limiting factor here an older graphics setup suggests an older CPU too as you can see from the OP his CPU is already bottlenecking his 1070 at 1080p & that is causing his stutter.

The irony being that he would more than likely get a better smoother experience bumping the resolution up to 1440p as this makes the GPU work harder slowing down frame rates slightly & reducing the load on the CPU. Effectively because the GPU is working harder it's not outstripping what the CPU can do & isn't having to wait for the CPU to provide it with more instructions, reducing microstutter.

As I said previously, setting up Vsync at 1080p (to 60fps) will have a similar effect - the gpu isn't trying to push out maximum frame rate so the CPU doesn't have to work as hard to keep up, reducing microstutter.
