Hardware & Technical GTX 1080 TI coming soon

AMD are expected to release Vega in May, so they'll certainly want to at least catch if not leapfrog current nvidia by that time. 1080 Ti will buy nvidia some time but they'll need more sooner or later. Given Pascal was mostly a clock boost over Maxwell, I hope to see some more radical new stuff in the next gen.

I'm an AMD fan boy (lol[squeeeee]) and as you can imagine I've been quite disappointed the last few years. So I'm really excited for the next gen! Bring it on!

Why would we need next series so soon? 10 series is already ahead of the curve.

AMD will be using HBM2 with the Vega cards whilst nvidia are currently using GDDR5X. Regardless of a performance difference (if any) this will be seen as nvidia using older tech. Also, as Porina said Pascal was not much more than taking advantage of the optimizations naturally occurring by use of a smaller process, whereas AMD have been more innovate with their new architecture (whether that translates into higher performance remains to be seen). nvidia will probably do a Pascal refresh in the summer (as a stop gap until Volta is ready) and AMD will almost certainly do a Polaris refresh for the low/mid range cards when they release their 500 series since they have managed to make some power-related optimizations. It's likely we'll soon be seeing a yearly cycle in GPU product generations.

Watch out for those nvidia fanboys though they can get nasty: https://www.techpowerup.com/230800/amd-vs-nvidia-flamewar-claims-its-first-irl-fatality

The 1080Ti was a potential upgrade candidate for me , but the main reason for this was to go to 1440p and to do that I want a 27inch 1440p G-Sync IPS Monitor .... That upgrade combo looks like it will be silly money with the way things are priced in the UK at the moment.

I am hoping Vega delivers so I can go with that and the FreeSync equivalent monitor which should be a considerably cheaper combination.

GTX 1080 TI is not really interresting of you already own a 1080 card, because how much will you get? 20% gain?

I need to see if its a hugely advancement or just for the uber graphic tweakers.

As soon as there is a black and white one, I'll be all over it. I currently have an MSI Armor 1080, black and white, but am in the process of building a new computer with my son...he is on a 740m right now. I was thinking about just getting a 1060 for the new system, but nah...I'm getting the 1080ti, and he gets the crappy old 1080 :D

not even close-- the titan (pascal) doesn't give across the board 20% over the 1080, the 1080 ti will be somewhere between the 1080 and the titan. If you have a 1080, I'd pass on this. If you have a 980 or less, I'd give this strong consideration. anything higher.. unless you're running three monitors in surround at 4k resolution, a 980ti is more than you need for this game.

If you're running VR, then it's a differnet story... I'd definitely want to be at least at a 1070. But if I had a 1080, I'd just stick with it. not a worthwhile upgrade.

Titan XP is upwards of 30% faster than the 1080 in many games at GPU limited settings.

The 1080 Ti is also likely to not be much slower than the Titan XP, if at all, from the recently announced specifications, at least at stock.

I can't wait for my nvidia voltorb! Volta ftw. I hope it's this year and at the same time AMD will unveil their super secret megafast GPU so we can have proper GPU war again. :D

I'm currently running a GTX 780Ti and given I don't use VR I really can't justify upgrading to a 1080 when the increase in performance won't be that noticeable. The benchmarks say a lot.
