GTX 1080 Ti/Oculus newcomer

Hey, been a long time player and have been playing at 1440p for a few years with my 780gtx ti in SLI. Anyway took the plunge and my EVGA 1080 ti arrives Monday. I also got the oculus rift and with settings down it does run and I have to say I'm blown away sat in the Anaconda and it's the most surreal experience ever.
My question is HOW ON EARTH IS GALAXY MAP USED???? it seems really difficult to navigate in VR and secondly my voice attack does not appear to work anymore. I have also ordered the touch controllers so will be getting a second sensor but what are the best settings for graphical quality? Yes it's costly but I have to say this VR is an absolute game changer.

Regards Cmdr Pazmeister (oh and to the baboon who destroyed my anaconda in Andhrimi whilst I was experiencing VR thanks very much that cost me a lot of credits!)

Welcome to VR. It really is a different game, isn't it.

You'll get a whole variety of answers about the galaxy map, mainly because there are a variety of ways to use it. Some will tell you use hotas only.

Personally, I mainly use the mouse because it's faster. Just spend a minute or two experimenting by dragging the mouse with every button combination. Drag with left mouse held down, right held down and both held down. Then try the middle mouse button. You'll straight away see all of the movement axes and zoom. Then when your selection circle is over the chosen system dot projected onto the graticule, just tap the joystick slightly to select to get the menu.

Regarding the graphics settings, start with one of the pre-set VR modes ED already provide in options. With the new 1080ti you'll probably be good to go with the max VR setting.

Welcome to the galaxy, cmdr. You're now in it rather than just looking at it. :)

Generally bind your hotas (if using one) to use the map. I'm on an old Sidewinder Pro so I just stick with keyboard and mouse (I need to change this really) the trick is put Grid on and use the keys (or your hotas) to select a star with the blue circle. If you're forced to use the mouse to click the icons keep your head totally still and also use the left hand menu to select stations/planets once at the system.

Setting are very personal but I use this at the moment (it may well change)...

Oh and do get Dr Kaii's profiler

http://www.drkaii.com/tools/edprofiler/

I have the X55 Hotas setup so I'll give the mouse a go just seems difficult to select a particular star and text isn't the easiest to read I guess this is because I'm still on the 780 ti presently. So what does that profiler do? And what ship would you suggest to try for the space views? Viper? Thanks

Dr. Kaii's profiler "simply" provides a user friendly editor and store/restore interface to the game's graphics settings. So you can store multiple profiles (e.g. if you want to switch between VR and screen), use profiles from other users - or only set the HUD colours to your preference (see the NO2O thread).

As for the ships - this might be a bit extreme, but when I switched from screen (1080 ultrawide + Tobii) to VR, I finally took the plunge and made a clear save. I'm now working towards upgrading my Sidey (Selene Jean might require the use of a different ship...) - and I'm currently in the top 75% with the BH CG (yes, in the sidey - kill stealing from police cruisers :D . Don't think that'll keep up, though, since the CG will probbaly run unhindered through the weekend, and I'm trying to scrape up some Aliiance bounties for Todd).

Forget the mouse, it's just a world of pain with an HMD - get it set up on your stick. Basically, you'll need to be able to move left, right, fwd, bwd, up, down and zoom in and out. Generally the first 4 are dealt with with your stick by default. I have a hat programmed to move up/down and zoom in/out.

This works fine for me :)

There has been like three threads this week alone discussing galaxy map.
Theres is usually one or two of them every month, so you are not alone ;)

Most important, turn on the grid.
Don't try to select stars like you can with a mouse, you need to zoom in close enough so the stsrs put dots on the grid, then pan the grid center on these dots.

Being able to zoom and pan at the same will help immensely.

Also FD messed up axis input in the maps, so panning with an analog device only moves half as fast as direct button, so if possible use pov hats for panning, and hat for up down/ zoom.

Find your own bindings, and practice, it took me a week or so to get ok with the gal map in vr.
Also, bookmarks bookmarks bookmarks.
