GTX 1080 worth it?

I've been out of the game (literally) and out of the PC scene for seven months or so. Is the nVidia GTX 1080 worth the astronomical $650 they're going for in regards to ED and VR?

Absolutely! It's a monster and absolutely necessary for decent VR gameplay. I bought a new PC 3 months ago. It's a dream. Also playing "old" games like Battlefield 4 in ULTRA is different. It's very nice eye candy now. My GTX570 was struggeling a lot with high settings. The 1080 just kicks butt.

I own the little sister, the 1070. I am totally fine with the results and the price tag is a lot smaller on this thing. So take it into your considerations. 25% less performance for about 40 to 50 percent less money is at least something to think about.

Yes for VR and yes if you have a 4K or 2.5k monitor. Definetly no if you have a 1080p monitor.

Just a word of warning the 1080ti is rumoured for release In Jan/Feb.

i am also thinking to buy a 1080 over my 980ti but not sure.

VR is fun yeah, but no idea how a 1080 can improve image quality of Elite on VR over my 980ti?

I'm in a similar boat, and now with ASW I have definitely settled on waiting at least one more generation to build a new rig.
If not more.

The GTX 1070 is more powerful with less power draw than the Maxwell Titan X, let alone the 980ti. So the 1080 would be even more so. I have the GTX 1070 and love it, I can run Elite at 4K 60fps no problem, VR with the Oculus without a hitch. Went with that instead of the 1080 in order to keep the overall costs of my gaming rig down. I might upgrade to the 1080ti if it proves to be worth it once that comes out.

Thanks all for the replies.

I didn't realize the 1070 was faster than a Maxwell Titan X. That's damn impressive.

There is no question if the 1080 is more powerful than my 980ti.

It's just not good enough to warrant the cost at this point, I would want at least 50% performance increase when getting a new $800 card (I get murdered by the VAT)

That is of course a cost to benefit equation that differs with our expendable income of course, if you dont need to pinch pennies, then by all means.

Hell yeah 2088mhz and 5400mhz ram Overclocked with 8gb, put a grin on my face and dented my wallet but I speak from a VR point of view

I have a 1080, and with the new Rift run-times, I'd say it's overkill. Had the 1070 and ASW been available when I upgraded, I probably would have bought a 1070 instead and saved a bundle.
