Anyone doing it? What's it like?

Or if you know you're stuff, how'd you think it'll cope?

Cheers.

I think I've got one of those.

It gets a bit choppy on the highest highest settings, but drop a few things down and it's pretty much 60 fps all the way :)

(disclaimer: I don't know much about these things, I just plug them in and play stuff!)

The GTX 960 is better, around 60FPS in space & 40 on the ground.

It's probably able to do more but it's "hobbled" with an AMD 860K & V-Sync in my rig. If it's the 2Gb model try it on medium settings first & gradually turn the wick up until performance starts to drop.

Don't bother with any AA or supersampling either, it will slow things down - especially SS.

Yeah, I think the guy I'm asking on behalf of is prepared to lose some quality in favour of low price, but I'll need to check.

Cheers people. :)

The 960 isn't much more than the 950, but wait.

The 1060 is just around the corner, I would advise him to wait for that, expect performance close to the 970 for the price of a 960, & both those cards to drop in price accordingly once it does drop.

That's a very good point that I had forgot about. Which is silly as I'm waiting for the price drop to add another 960 to my rig when it happens. :p

Thanks man. :)

Care to specify models? I'm not that familiar with AMD.

R9 380. Similar performance on paper, but the 960 is hamstrung by its 128-bit bus speed. Anything that demands a lot of vram will bog it down. It's a bottleneck. ED loves vram.

Again. AMD cards run hot, though. Nothing dangerous to the card, but they are quite warm. I ran a 390 under water and it still got up over 70.

I'm not an AMD OR Nvidia fan, by the way. I'm a price/performance fan. I run a 980ti right now. It isn't great price performance. I plan on getting a 1070.

Hey man thanks. I'll take this into consideration.

Or wait and see what happens in July once AMD release Polaris. Even if you don't want an AMD card it will probably push prices of all the last gen cards down.

As long as you don't have 2 of them in SLI, it will work, ED doesn't like SLI so much, also let games handle all setting in NVIDIA Panel, if you have 2 cards, use the second to handle PhysX.

I got 2 GTX 780 TI and that's how I set it up, most stutters are gone like that and I can play on ULTRA HIGH settings, also lock framerate to your monitor refresh rate or you will overheat your graphics card too much without gaining anything in terms of performance

No problem.

One more thing. While I don't have any issues with the drivers, I do hate AMD's software suite compared to Nvidia's. I just like Geforce experience much better than what AMD offers. I also like that it can install new drivers without needing to reboot. Just something to keep in mind. AMD cards are great performers for the money, though. No question about that.

Wait for Polaris too..maybe the RX 480 (just been announced at $199 I think)..also OP don't be worried about the lower settings; I have a Zotac GTX 970 Amp on a 144hz monitor cranked up with DSR to 4k on my rig..& also use my lappy when I'm away from home on med settings planets/high everywhere else..still totally playable & enjoyable with surprisingly good graphics..it is only people who have lost perspective on real life because this is all they do everyday, that say things like 'oh I could never play on anything less than ultra!' For me it makes very little difference once you are immersed (d'oh! I used the i word!)

I recently invested in a Sapphire R9 380. The $200 4GB model overclocked to 1010MHz. Came with a backplate pre-installed and everything.

Best investment I ever made. ED runs at a constant 60fps on the highest settings, 1080p.

I have a 4GB GTX 960 in my backup rig and I can tell you first hand that the fps will dip well under 50 from time to time, and that textures load a bit slower.

The R9 380 is definitely a better card for the same price.
