Hardware & Technical GTX 980 - Anandtech Review

Many news articles and tests in the press specialized appear now. GTX 980 and 970 are two great powerful cards. A true rupture with Kepler. Some weeks still and the prices are going to fall. Perfect for the gamma of ED

;)

Looks like I will wait for the Asus to release it's ROG laptop equipped with it - and it won't be long probably, excellent!

I just ordered the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1. I hope I didn't order too hastily but my old GTX470 is having problems.

Will that one be fast enough to run Elite Dangerous with the consumer Oculus Rift at 90fps?

I have two EVGA SC 980 graphics cards being delivered tomorrow before midday. I have to wait around 10 days for my waterblocks to arrive. ;)

You are also fast to buy, that the new Maxwells are fast

:D

I guess if I want to boost my performance for the Rift with a GTX 970 the best way would be to buy a second one and go SLI.

SLI will bring superior performance in all the domains, certainly. But perhaps test a single card to begin ? And wait that the prices fall ?

I've just ordered a new machine with an Intel i7 4790k 4.0 Ghz CPU, 16GB RAM and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 4GB GPU. Should be perfect for ED!

What blocks did you go for?

I went for the EK waterblocks but i cancelled my orders for both the cards and the blocks because im waiting on either the classifieds which will have extra power phases and volt modding support.

Either those in 1 - 2 weeks or i will wait for the Titan X in 4-6 weeks. Titan X is likely to be around £899 or more.

Why not go for the HydroCopper when it is released ?

I had planned to change to watercooled, but these plans are now on hold due to buying a new bathroom !!! (How dull).

i hope the next few graphics drivers improve the performance, i bought my brother one for his birthday and some games are still noticeably laggy at 2560x

I took delivery of the Zotac GTX 980 AMP Extreme today.

I run Elite Dangerous on the DK2 supersampled at 2560x1440. The single 980 achieved 75 FPS consistently in space, and about 60 FPS in large stations, it's a significant step up from my old GTX 680.

All that impressed me a fair amount, what impressed me more was Zotac's cooling solution. It's an air cooled card running 3 x 80 mm fans beneath a sizable aluminium finned heatsink, so I expected it to be fairly noisy. It's not quiet but it's a good few dB lower than when my 680 was flat out and the fans run ~ 10% slower. Further it capped out on the cooling stakes at 69 C, averaging ~63 C most of the time. This is a good 10 C cooler than my old 680.

The card is ~ 2 cm longer than my 680 which may give some mid sized case owners pause, but I had plenty of wriggle room in my HAF x V2.

Considering the 980 is overclocked at a whopping 1440 Mhz (~300 Mhz above stock) boosted, I think it's amazing. It benchmarked on my Advanced 3DMark at a comparable level (within 100 points) to my old 680s in SLI in Firestorm and actually exceeded by old set up for Icestorm Extreme.

I'll certainly be buying a partner for this in the new year.

Typo probably - 75FPS in space and 60FPS at the stations? And do you have VSYNC ON?
