GTX 980 or 2 GTX 970s

I've been given the go ahead by the boss to get a new PC \0/
So I am going to get a pre-built one because I really can't be doing will building one myself.

My current PC is pretty old but has a GTX-970 in it. Would it be best to get a new PC with a GTX-980 fitted? or one with a 970 and stick my current 970 in there and have SLI

Any advice would be gratefully received (I mainly play ED on the Rift)

2x970s have the potential to be much better than a 980 if nvidia ever release the promised VR SLI mode. Right now, normal SLI supposedly results in slight input lag. Perhaps wait and see what nvidia are promoting at GDC in march.

Personally I have gone with a single 970 and I can run the DK2 fine. I did plan on a second 970 but have put that on hold until CV1 is released. The game runs sweet.
I did go round my mates place who has just brought his DK2 and has a single 980. After helping him set up I am now glad I didn't shell out the extra £200 for the 980 is I didn't think it was that big a difference at all.

Running a 2nd SLI 970 could give you a bit more of headache with setup but people are running SLI fine.
Anything more than a single 970 will let you run higher levels of Super Sampling which can improve image quality slightly.

For me the limiting factor is the DK2 screen. You just wont get any awesome visuals out of it. You can grunt some minor improvements in but for me I am happy with the single 970 and gives me the flexibility (and budget) to see whats needed for CV1. That's were it's at.

I was faced with a similar choice last week
1 980 OR 2 970's

I went with the 2X 970's and couldn't be more pleased, they work really well and finally i now can crank the detail up to the max and the jitter is gone with the exception to planets in supercruise which everybody gets.

Also for future reference if they ever get one card to render each eye piece working your laughing all the way to the CV1

Thanks guys, that's the way I was kinda leaning.
I've ordered the PC with the 970. I'll stow my current 970 for a while until I can afford a good quality PSU to run them in SLI.

Personally, I can't stand the latency that comes from running SLI in VR. It's disorienting and immersion breaking. I had two 970s and sold them to friends to get a single 980.

970 has problems in sli mode have you not heard all the flap about how nvidia released inaccurate specs ?... go with the 980, and if you want sli,..get 2 x 980's

2 x 970's will blow a single 980 away but, it does come with some downsides. Even my SLI 770's are faster than a single 980 or a Titan for that matter but, I'd trade them for a single 980 just for convenience, heat and better compatibility with more games being top of my list. IMO.

BTW, my SLI 770's run awesome @75fps, 1080p Ultra settings with no latency issues at all. Don't know about the 970's in SLI but, no issues here outside what everyone (stuttering) is experiencing.

Having run Elite with 770's SLI and now 980's SLI I can't see any difference between SLI and one card. I play at max settings, tried it with one 980, got some more judder than usually, put back on SLI.

I know the technical reason people say its bad, but I can't tell.

I went from a single 770 to a single 970 and noticed a performance improvement at the same settings i used for the 770 but decided to add another 970 to the mix, which enabled me to really crank up the options
Have not experienced any latency issues and everything feels and responds the same as playing with a single card with the exception of the level of quality i can run the game at.

I get no latency issues with my sli setup. never would have imagined that 2x gtx670's would let me ultrafy ED on my rift but it does. a good way to test for latency is to look at your cockpit dashboard and rapidly rock your head side to side. if there is any latency you'll see the dashboard catch up with your head movement. do this while docked in a star port.

I do not get any latency issues with my 970 SLI rig - it is probably a setup thing....driver thing....who knows.

Loving my setup with ED and the rift......

Once I mistakenly forgot to enable SLI on my 970s after an outing in another game.

With the settings I was using, I was shocked with the latency, lag, judder when I started ED and got into the cockpit - uuuurghh!

I got really worried and wondered what an earth was up - had there been an update that cocked everything up?

Anyway, shut down the game, went into NVidia CP and realised that SLI was diabled. Renabled it, and booted up the game.

Smooth as you like and looking bootiful.

So, in my rig (and I may be the only one) SLI makes a significant difference.

Nosh

Your not alone, many of us have SLI rigs and they're awesome.
