Hardware & Technical Gtx 980ti now or wait and get gtx1070?

I'm in a bit of an awkward position. I want to replace my aging gtx970, I've got a budget of £500. Ideally I'd wait for the gtx1080, but the confirmed uk price is £619, which is way over budget.

The gtx1070 is expected to be around £370-400, but being the slower of the new cards will it outpace a gtx980ti which I could get now for about £450??

Remember that price is for the Founders Edition though (i.e. $100 extra for a reference cooler which won't be as good as the AIB coolers) so expect the AIB cards to be less than that. In theory they should be about $100 less but depending on features and markup for an early product the prices will vary considerably.

EDIT: I would actually wait until June 10 until the more respected UK retailers (scan, overclockers, amazon etc.) have a price on their website for both cards. Of course they might put the price on early even before you can order (amazon often do this).

EDIT 2: by the way this is a similar thread from a couple of days ago which you may find useful: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=251623

Yep I panicked when I got the email saying the Vive was on the way and I thought my current card wouldn't cope, for a week or two it's not really worth ordering now. At the very least the 980 ti will drop in price once the new cards are available and you can put the rest away for your next upgrade.

Thanks to Main Sequence and others for talking me down! :)

OT Vive stuff
Oh wow that moment you pick the controllers up and they're there just where they appear in game - I can't even describe it, its like some form of magic. Turn them round in your hand and they turn round in game, the quality (even on my lowly card) is way better than I was expecting but not tried Elite yet, that may have to wait a day or two.

Bit of a derp monent, i hadn't realised the "founders" version was just a new name for the reference card, a £100 premium for the reference 1080 seems a bit steep. Will definately wait and see if I can afford a non-founders/reference card (preferably msi). If not it will be the 1070 for me :)

Thanks for the advice guys :)

The rumors say that the GTX 1070 will be also fast as GTX Titan. To wait for the GTX 1070, to have the last generation with all the advantages

GTX 1070 / GTX 1080 almost here (NDA lifted), Polaris 10 just around the corner (Computex ?? - although this is likely to be a mainstream card not enthusiast) and rumours of VEGA being brought forward to October. I would personally say that now is not the time to buy a card :D

Prices are going to be all over the shop. Let the dust settle between the Red and Green teams and in that time maybe you could save for a better card .....

In intend to sit tight until the 1080Ti (or whatever they call it arrives). Not that I need a new card, but you know ......
