Hardware & Technical GTX770 video card - replace or SLI?

Apologies for what's probably a stupid question, but am a lifelong Mac (and Amiga!) user and my PC experience is limited. But built a rig purely for ED during beta and thinking of upgrading it a bit, since I noticed it doesn't like the highest settings.

Have a 2gb GTX 770 in there now. Would you think replace it with a 970, or add another 770 and link them?

Wait a month or two, probably they will provide more information about upcoming GPUs. And who knows, they are going to announce new Pascal GPUs in a month or two. GDC is in one month time, previously NVidia were making announcements there.

I was running a GTX660 that was struggling a bit.
Couldn't really justify the cost of a 900 series card so I got another GTX660 fairly cheap and went SLI.
This config is working fine with 64 bit Horizons, driving a 2560x1440 monitor at good frame rates, with most graphics options at Ultra or High.

Depends. Switching from Titan original/780 Ti to Titan X/980Ti doubles the frame rate in ED (100% increase), while power consumption is about the same, whereas Titan/780Ti SLI increases the frame rate by ~70%, at the same time power consumption is doubled.

I am not sure whether this would apply to 770 upgrade to 970, however, it is likely that the latter is going to provide the same performance as 770 in SLI. However, 970 is going to use way less power, and it does not require a very powerful PSU.

However, I'd say that buying Maxwell GPU now would make sense only if the currently used GPU fails. Otherwise, it should be possible to wait a little longer until the reveal of the new GPUs.

The rest of your spec would appreciated and what native resolution you plan to run at ☺

I also have a 770 and I'm waiting for the new Pascal cards. At the moment it runs ED sweetly (and any other game) so I'm in no hurry to upgrade.

Exactly what I was going to say.

ED runs fine for now on the 770. I'll replace when the next big improvement comes along.

Hah, probably would!

MSI GTX 770 graphics card
Corsair AM750 Gold PSU

When I built it about two years ago, was more or less the best of everything, apart from the graphics card.

Currently playing with a Dell 2413 monitor at 1920x1200 (my former work monitor until I replaced it with a Thunderbolt display), but am thinking I'd like something a bit bigger/better. Did spot a very nicely rated Benq 27" 4k monitor, and while that might be overkill for ED right now, would at least be futureproofed somewhat. So yeah, seems like I'll wait for that bloke Pascal to show up in a few months, and just use what I have for now.
