GTX970 SLI + Horizons ?

I'm considering adding another GTX970 to my existing one. I know nothing about running SLI though, and wondered how well this works on the 970, especially with Horizons ? Does anybody have experiences they can share ?

Or would I be better off with a single 980 ?

Hiya.

If your goal is to run horizons better right now I would say don't do it. 980 will serve you better. SLI will improve rendering quality but introduce latency. I have an extremely strong VR stomach and even I find using SLI too much at the moment.

Touch wood FD will bring in proper Nvidia VR support etc in future and once that happens perhaps 2 x 970s would serve you perfectly well.

For now though, having tried 2x Titan X in SLI, I've gone back to using one card and just pushing physx to the second in ED. The added graphical realism and performance is offset by loss of presence from the latency and also feeling a bit ill.

I am using my 780s in SLI and I suffer none of the issues WolfishHickory mentioned, not sure if I only have even stronger stomach than him, or if it is some setup issue.

Thanks. Curiously, I didn't experience any of the re-centering nausea problems that plagued recent builds. But driving the SRV makes me sick in seconds...

As others have said at this stage SLI / Xfire is not really that good for VR, stick to a single GPU at this stage and if Nvidia and AMD can get there 1XGPU per eye (Game Works and Liqud VR ) up and running correctly, then it will be time to go SLI/Xfire.

I've tested extensively with 980Ti SLI. But I'm not going to weigh in until I've tested again because there have been several driver releases and two major game updates since the last time I tried SLI. For those of you who have provided input, has any one of you tested SLI in Horizons?

I just upgraded my three screens to 144hz monitors and when testing SLI on other games I can not percieve any latency at all, however on my old 60hz monitor lag was noticeable. The higher 90hz of the retail HMDs alone may eliminate SLI latency so it may very well be a plausible option to run SLI in VR.

I'll do some more testing in the coming days with SLI in VR since the major updates and post the SLI thread if people are interested.

No VR for me I vomit a chicken sized lump. But I am Im running two MSI GTX970's (slightly overclocked) with triple 1080p monitors but on Horizons and all is super shiny and good. No issues what so ever.

However, the general concencous is, always use one card if it can out perform two separate cards. And in the case of a 980 this is true.....if it's a higher end version!. It will utilise more VRAM at least 6Gb whereas the 970's are 4Gb (3.5 usable) and connecting them in SLI doesn't increase that figure.

Ultimatly your our budget may dictate what you buy... Or, it may not. Happy days.
Flimley.

Just tested, SLI is definitely a no go for VR in Horizons, there is no profile for the new executable. I have updated the SLI thread.
