GTX980m playable at absolute lowest graphics settings?

I have an Asus ROG G751JY laptop with a 980m under the hood. More than enough power for most normal games, but obviously not great for Oculus/Vive.
.
On the SteamVR Performance test, I score a 4.4, which isn't great, but it's at the very top end of the "capable" (yellow) range.
.
My question is this: Will it run without judder at the lowest possible settings?
.
I'm not looking for 980ti level performance here, but I was hoping that I might be able to use it in a pinch (I'm travelling for the next three weeks and would like to pack my Vive for the trip if it's worth it).
.
The only reason I haven't tested it myself is that I only just got the computer back from the shop and I haven't had the chance to fire up the game and I'm leaving for my trip tomorrow.
.
Any help would be apprecited. Thanks all!

Nope. It will stutter.

EDIT: If you're leaving tomorrow, try it before then and let us know.

Your first issue is optimus - I can't remember if your model has a hardware switch that 'turns it off' (ie bypasses iGPU). If not then one of those devices won't work.

As you know, people say that 980m=970desktop but reality is closer to 780Ti desktop in most games. That will take planet surfaces out and force you down to very low supersampling.

For this reason I ordered an OSVR which I know runs irrespective of optimus and with a DK2 resolution can be handled by a 770 (ie 980m) and is also relatively cheap. Then once we get mobile pascal in September I'll get a Vive (if the current issues get addressed by FDev).

No Optimus on my machine. I know this because I see only one Display adapter option in device manager, so I know I am running a single 980m and integrated Graphics are never used.

As for planetary surfaces, I don't intend to do anything more than simple, therapeutic, A2B Trading while using my computer when traveling, with the occasional dog fight with an interdicting vulture.

I plan on setting up my machine today and giving it a shot with everything turn to ultra low and I will report back here what I find.

I hope so :) I am planning to run ED on a Dell XPS 15 (GTX 960M) with a 4K screen on my business trips over the next few months. I get 30 fps on the recommended settings. Perhaps I will lower to FHD to get more fps

My Vive is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. While I don't have the Dell's XPS version laptop I can test my Alienware 17r2. Since I was planning to test the performance with the internal GTX 980m vs the external GTX 980/Graphcs amp I can post results here if it would help.

Yes please!

Alienware is a heavy beast definitely not for the road. I opted for the XPS since I travel quite a lot. Hope it will live up to the expectations for Elite

Well, I run elite in Ultra with everything maxed and I'm getting solid buttery - smooth game play (don't use fraps in-game, sry), but the point of this post was to see whether Elite could handle even a bare bones stripped down VR experience at minimum settings.

I tried installing the Vive and SteamVR software on my system, but I got some kind of an error (didn't screenshot it, sry) and it did something that made the computer hang and freeze about 2 mins after boot up. I tried manually uninstalling both pieces of software to no avail - something perhaps at the registry level was borking my OS, so I was forced to do a Windows 10 "reset", which basically reset windows to its original condition with most programs needing to be reinstalled.

Anyways, couldn't give it another try in the limited time I had to reinstall everything.

My Rift arrives in a week, so I'll be tempted to try it out with that in time (although my inclination was to put it unopened on EBay)...

So I finally got everything set up. I believe there is much tweaking to do as my machine and setup is not performing very well.

Current config is using the external GPU GTX980.
As of right now using the VR High presets I get 43.5 FPS average. Text is readable and there stutter is rare.

Ill post again once I have re cabled everything to use the internal GPU.
