Guardian gear at all viable in maelstrom/maelstrom area?

EDIT: I should probably present this in the form of a question.
Can anyone provide a definitive rundown of what happens to Guardian weapons in and around maelstroms? Are they useless in maelstroms? All but useless? Just annoying? Is it only in systems with a maelstrom present? How are we taking down the big guys?

I had just started getting passable with my Guardian weapon skills when I took an extended vacation. Then, the maelstroms upended any progress I had actually remembered. I haven't seen anything that's clear on what exactly they're doing to guardian weapons, and to be honest, have just been too lazy to look myself (I've internet-looked, just not super-hard).
What I know (whether it's right or wrong...) :
  • All modules take damage in the clouds
  • Guardian modules take damage in maelstrom-denoted systems, to varying effect, except the hull ones
  • Guardian weapons "malfunction" (that's all I've seen. I assume they randomly crash/reboot) in maelstrom-systems
  • The new upgraded AX guns ain't too bad (good enough to solo interceptors?)
  • I'll probably remember more...
My plan is to go shoot at interceptors and bigger. Eventually. Right here right now, I have killed a total of 4 scouts ever. I've been splattered by a couple interceptors, but have gotten pretty good at running away from them. I can put up a solid fight, but haven't killed any yet. Since I actually have a practiced hand (sorta) with the gauss cannons, I'd like to keep using them. They're also cooler. But if gimballed AX multis are the better choice, I'll make sure to get a set.
Missiles? I guess? I'm not a fan of missiles.

All non Guardian modules do not take damage in the cloud, the cloud is actually quite safe if you're just sitting there idling under 20% heat. Guardian mods take damage in the system, apart from Guardian HRPs which are safe to use.
I would not go interceptor fighting in the maelstrom instances. Far too many caustic mines and caustic clouds around.
I use 2 x Class 2 gauss cannons and 2 x class 2 pre-engineered plasma chargers for interceptor fights.
 
Guardian MRPs go down just about as fast as a 1A AFMU with standard ammo can repair them. With Premium ammo (or presumably a larger AFMU - but my Vulture doesn't have the spare power for that), you can actually complete the repair - just to watch it degrade again.
Guardian HRPs seem fine - at least they don't show any degradation.
Didn't bring any other Guardian equipment, just two AX MCs.
Those drift(?) mines are bigger than they look, which probably is why I couldn't get them to show up on the scanner (i.e. I was way too far away). From what I've seen, they're about the size of an Orthrus or larger (Orthrus was connecting up with one of the mines/caustic generators).
