Guardian key

I had a spare Guardian key so rather than carry it around I jettisoned it. On close inspection there seems to be something Hexagonal or maybe a cube within it. Did the typical human thing and shot it, but it just exploded. Anyone got any ideas what it is, its really bugging me.

the relic and the key appear the same except the key seems to at times have a shield as well and seems to be more destructive than the relic
if you have followed any of the recent mysteries you might also know or guess they release radiation..enough to kill thargoids and people.
they are a part of currently in use guardian weapons also.
