Guardian Lightning Gun

Here's a fun weapon, sort of stolen from the Thargoids.

A Lightning Gun!
A fixed energy weapon (infinite ammo), with a very short range (1km), and moderate damage. You charge it up, and release to discharge the cannon towards your victim.
It uses quite a lot of power, and generates loads of heat. Like the plasma charger, you can release at any point, but it's best to fully charge it for extra damage.
The difference? It discharges more like a beam weapon, rather than in one go, getting weaker as it drains, but even fully charged it will discharge is about 2~ seconds. Plus, the lightning bolt can jump to nearby targets (250m), after striking a target.
Perfect for use on swarms, as the bolt will discharge through the entire swarm due to the proximity, however, the bolt loses damage as it goes from target to target.
The bolt is indiscriminate however, so it's not wise to fire it off until you're confident it won't jump somewhere it shouldn't.
Works particularly well on the semi organic Thargoid ships and can also cause multiple malfunctions in unshielded human ships, but doesn't do a lot of damage to anything human. Can be used to destroy ordinance. Against packhounds, it would potentially destroy the lot, if you can hit one to trigger the reaction.

All targets for chain shots are considered equal, ships, Thargoids, cargo, materials, ordinance, so make sure the path is clear of what you intend to target. :D

The upsides are;
It's excellent Vs swarms due to chain fire.
Good Vs Thargoids in general,
Can cause malfunctions in human ships,
Excellent at clearing ordinance.
Can be charged to suit needs.

Downsides are;
Very short range
High power use
High heat generation
Potential for friendly fire
May destroy cargo and material in close proximity.
Useless for human hull damage,
Not particularly effective on shields either.

Thoughts?

Sounds fun, you're not the first to suggest a lightning weapon. Chasing a thargon swarm in a Viper is fun, but you feel pretty toothless. This, with bonds for killing thargons, would add a new role to AX wings. As would a suggestion I made a while back to just let us use the "target submodule" buttons to aim at individual drones.
