Guests leaving early - why?

I started a sandbox zoo recently and noticed some strange guest behavior.
After building an entrance area I placed the first enclosure a bit off to the side, the general idea being splitting the zoo by geographic regions. Guests started coming in, but at a certain point, about 100m or so in the park, they turn around and leave. Their happiness levels are still very much in the green, so there must be some sort of timer. Seems like if they don't see an animal after walking for a certain amount of time or distance, they just walk out.

So... is this a necessary feature? What is the benefit of having a rule like this in the game mechanics? It just seems to limit creative freedom in a game that emphasizes this, which is extra weird in sandbox mode. Also, the distance they walk did not even look that far. Do people just not build larger entrance plazas? (And again, it did not even look that big.) Would moving the entrance gates around help? Am I missing something here? I'd really like to hear some opinions on this.

I agree with Luuknoord, a screenshot would help a lot...

I've seen quite a few large entrance square/plaza and never seen/heard of this issue.

Sure can do!

This is the entrance. There will be a train station on top, entrances to the regions on the sides, and probably some food stalls and stuff at the red plaza. The enclosure is on the right. That place, where the last visitors are on the red path, is where everyone turns around and leaves. I'll attach another shot that goes up to the park borders for size reference. From the paths I would guess that the turning point is at about 100m walking distance, with another 50 or so left to the viewing points of the habitat.

Yes, at this moment the route to the first habitat is too long, without anything of interest on the way, thus they loose interest half way.

I do build plaza's etc. But not this large. That main path looks like a runway of an airfield (it really is too big).

The entrance is really nice btw! But just that section after that is currently being your bottleneck. But adding some things of interest (shops, habitats, vivariums) might help.
At the current state it's an issue. But once further developed it might not be anymore.

I think Luuknoord is right, the first habitat is too far away. That would be by first guess..

Try adding small exhibits for spiders/snakes/reptiles along this "runway", maybe that could draw visitors more into the zoo.

Maybe 1 or 2 between the "Runway" and the gray asphalt path and 1 or 2 slightly further away..

Doesn't take much adjusting of your zoo and this looks good.

Thanks for the answers!
Will this change once there are food and drink stalls in place, or do they need animals there? Some exhibits are probably good choice.

I still find the existence of this rule questionable, though. I mean, they are not even in there long enough for their happiness to go down.

True, but guests need to have that constant trigger (tip).
Once they don't spot something new soon enough, they head for the exit.

Hello, I'm experiencing the same issue. My guests make it to the end of the first plaza and then leave, wishing they could have had more time to see the only exhibit. Which they never visited in the first place. I appreciate the previous responses but I'm looking for the why and how this works so I can plan better.

Can a developer please give some insight as to how the guest visitation timer works and some further information on travel distance and interest levels?

Hi there Please post a screenshot of your park.
Then you can see better why guests go too early.

I suspect they may have too few animals near the entrance.
