Greetings. Let me go straight to the topic.
We've been testing missiles with some friends. 2 ASP Explr vs Fed Corvette. 12 rocket tubes against 3 Point Defence.
We've tried different variants. I'll mention the most important ones.
So firing all 12 tubes (12 rockets at once) resulted in 3-4 rockets hitting the Corvette. ~30% chance (3 pnt defence)
Firing 2 tubes resulted in 0-1 (mostly 1) rockets hitting the Corvette. ~50% chance (3 pnt defence)
Firing 2 tubes resulted in 0-1 (mostly 1) rockets hitting the Corvette. ~50% chance (1 pnt defence)
We've came to one conclusion. Point defence is dumb. I mean that this little turret is firing the first rocket that got into its range. If the rocket gets into the range of two, three or more turrets at once all of those try to hit the same rocket, resulting in passing through the other ones. This came into my mind when testing 2 tubes. With the variant of 6 (2-3 hitting), 8 (2-3 hitting) or even 12 tubes the explosion of one rocket probably damages other ones around (12 rockets flying close to each other) so that's why the percentage of rockets hitting the ship was a bit lower.
Conclusion:
There's no point in adding more than one point defence to the specific flank of the ship. Of course two point defence turrets have higher chance to faster destroy incoming missile, but the chance is that low it's not worth wasting the utility slot. You could use it for chaff or heat sink or whatever.
Here's my suggestion:
a) Add another point defence, that will cooperate with other of the same type and selectively choose rockets to shot at.
b) Add above functionality to already existing turrets (could be too OP)
c) Leave as it is now (please no T.T )
I've made a pool, so you guys can go for it and vote your opinion.
Waiting for your opinions commanders!
P.S. I don't know about swarming missiles, because none of us had those so we couldn't test it.
