Guide To Playing Elite Dangerous

My guide to Playing Elite Dangerous

Playing powerplay last night I realized why I generally like Elite Dangerous even though its is riddled with bugs and features of poor or questionable design.

1. Focus on what game elements work. Generally it keeps working. Lots of stuff works good.

2. Ignore game elements that don't work. If they haven't been fixed in the last week or two, its not getting fixed. Bug reports and/or complaining is a waste of time. For maximizing game enjoyment It is best to ignore and move on to features that do work. Sad, but luckily there is enough ingame stuff to enjoy.

3. Consider anything that does get fixed a happy bonus.

It is a great game with lots of stuff best ignored.

I'm interpreting this as a guide to the metagame - what approach to take to the game to best enjoy it (for a given value of 'best'):

Try to figure things out for yourself before looking for advice. Lots of it can be figured out & while lots of it can't, I have found it generally more satisfying to figure out how to do things like help factions & start wars than to actually fight those wars. Similarly I have a lot of fun figuring out what I want a ship build to be able to do & getting it closer to some sort of optimum than to use the damned things for their designed purpose, although ultimately flying the ships is why I keep playing.

Learn to appreciate the fine turing that went into the almost entirely procedurally generated game map, it is imo a work of art.

I 100% agree with the approach to ignore anything that frustrates (including bugged features). The game is trying to tick a lot of boxes cheaply & to a great extent manages it. Stuff like multiplayer game mechanics are there, they kinda work but ultimately this is a single player game with parallel play where you interact with the effects of other players without necessarily actually meeting those players although it can happen.

Pick a place & declare it to be yours, and try to hold that ground for as long as you can. Especially if you attack others. Have some way for your enemies to try to get their revenge & maybe you will earn their respect, maybe they will earn yours.

imo.
