Guide to Story/Lore?

As I keep watching ED vidoes and tutorials I am realizing something: we PS4 users will arrive into the world of ED after more than 2 years of "story" evolving, with lots stuff going on about which we know very little. There are a lot of past and present community events and discoveries which are not easy to follow for someone who does not play the game (for ex. I have only a dim understanding of what the Colonia Initative or the Formidine Rift Mystery are). Is there somewhere on this forum (or on YouTube) some kind of summary of what has been going on in the ED universe over the last 2 years? A kind of non-gameplay tutorial filling in all this kind of background info. Possibly something that does not require reading 1000s of forum threads here and there...

I would agree with the above. Obsidian Ant's Youtube channel is a good place to start. Wikis and fiction written by Drew Wagar and David Hughes

Thanks everyone. I had seen a number of OA's tutorial videos, but hadn't realised just how many more he's got uploaded. However, I need to find a balance: he shows so many awesome sights that I wouldn't want to have my exploration experience spoiled!

I will see if I can write a 'Previously on Elite Dangerous' for the benefit of PS4 Commanders (and anyone else interested!) for my lore page.

Thanks Drew. It appears that there is a lot more going on than you might expect, if you know where to look. I am not sure the vast majority of new PS4 users will be aware of a fraction of this without some form of potted hyperlink history for them to dip into.

Having never had a PC powerful enough to run Elite (jumped from windows 98 to early laptop), I thought Elite was first and foremost a Sandbox / Choose-your-own-Adventure type game. I didn't realise that there had been so many instances of the Elite collective pulling together to achieve a common goal.

(shame on me)
Looking forward to the game even more.

Sounds great. Would be good to have an up-to-date resource where new players can go and get up to speed on the lore and the event history of the game. Actually it would be useful for experienced players as well as let's be honest there is a lot out there and it's a bit "all over the place" at the moment.

That'd be awesome Drew. I've already read a lot from your page, but this kind of thing (as Snowymonk says above) would be a massive help for the thousands of new players that are going to flood into ED once the PS4 version is out. Hell, I don't even have the game and I spent the last 2 weeks trying to catch up with all that there is to know (mechanics- and lore-wise), and I can imagine how someone would feel pretty discouraged upon buying the game and finding oneself in the middle of a long and complex story.

Incidentally, this catching up I'm doing also means that I am about to order the Audible version of your book (I do most of my fiction "reading" with audiobooks -- are you happy about how that came out?).

The same argument came up with Xbox vs PC. The galaxy is big, really big. You have no Idea how mind bogglingly big space is. Very soon PS4 will be part of the story.

It would also help firm up which aspects of the past two years that Frontier deem still live and which storylines are further down the relevance stack.
It is a big undertaking but once the back of it is broken, it would be a valuable canon for both new users to read up on and also act a source of public record should arguments or disputes arise about who said what, who did what, in what order and to whom.

Blindpew on youtube does lots of story involved vids.
Its more about creating your own story and adventures.
