I think that game was mentioned in the "What games are you playing at the moment"-thread, but it deserves its very own thread.

Just played it recently and I am VERY impressed. I thought the space sim genre is dead, but that thing feels like a new Wing Commander or Freespace title. The dogfigthing is impressive, it has a very space operaish story and it is free to play to boot. The prologue that you need to play at first feels like an AAA space shooter and could be from Chris Roberts himself, complete with tons of cutscenes and stuff. It has some Elite elements too, although that part is very rudimentary for now.

Very impressed, everyone who played Wing Commander, Freespace and Elite should play it right now.

I hope that link is allowed, if not, mods you can edit it out if you want:

I strongly, and I mean really strongly dissagree - it's an awful mess of instanced shallow boring tosh. It's just not worth the look in in my opinion. Bubblegum space shooter at best, wannabe futuristic WOW at worst. There just isn't any ambition there.

Hm, yeah, the MMO aspects of it aren't that great, at least now.

I am more in love with the prologue, feels like Freespace 3, short but good.

BP is decidedly average. As mentioned the prologue is great, come to think of it the gfx are good, but it kind of stops there. Nothing special, move along ...

Well, I admit was kinda over-excited by the prologue. The prologue really feels as if Wing Commander and Freespace never died.

The game after the prologue is kinda empty, true. Maybe they will add some content.

But anyway, the game (and thus the prologue) is free, and I still think that everyone who enjoyed the grand space opera shooters of the 90s just must play the prologue.

In my opinion, it's story isn't bad, the graphics are excellent for an F2P game, but I think the game lacks "soul" at the moment.

Whilst BP has a good premise, one of the areas that it's lacking in is diversity in the ships. The "modularity" thing is good, but all the ships essentially just follow two different design themes with just differences in size between the 3 variants in each theme.

And that is the difference between BP and Elite. At least in Elite the ships looked very different.

Perhaps as it matures, it will gain what it currently doesn't have.

I've found this thread again by reading in my post-archive.. funny.

Elite Dangerous turned out to be pretty much like Black Prophecy. Instanced to the extreme and very shallow grind mechanics, with an initial wow factor that fades off very fast.
