Actually, remaining OT, this is incorrect. Sir Davy changed the spelling of this element not once, but twice, over a period of several years (Alumium -> Aluminum -> Aluminium). The prevalence of Webster's dictionary in the US at the end of the 19th century made the second spelling the popular one there, even though the rest of the international community had long settled on the third version. So it's not a misspelling, it's a lack of keeping up-to-date.
Dictionaries only reflect the language spoken by the majority. So if most people are saying "aluminum" then that's what goes in. It's why we have ridiculous made-up words like "selfie" in the Oxford English now.![]()
