General / Off-Topic HA-HA Trolling backfires

What a disgraceful, toxic excuse of a human being. I hope he is stripped of his knighthood as well.

Twelve weeks, of which he will probably serve 2/5ths. This guy not only used racist language but also offered £5000 to someone who would "run over" Gina Miller.

A few years ago two guys posted on facebook that they intended to go looting if there was more rioting. They got 4 years in prison.

At the moment UK prisons are really hellish places to be. Rioting happens regularly, suicides and murders are at an all time high, and the prison service has said things are almost at breaking point. A combination of austerity and an insistence of "locking everyone up" have created a special type of punishment. Even for 5 or so weeks this guy will feel every day of that.

I seriously doubt he'll be in a real prison, just some low security resort for a couple of weeks.

The worst he has to cope with is substandard Chardonnay and cheap cognac.

He probably went to Cambridge with the judge.

In Finland he would have gotten a suspended sentence. In general if you get less than two years, you don't actually go to jail on a first offence here.

And yes, it's infuriatingly stupid.

i guess it considers going through trial and the clear possibility of punishment (and consequences for life) is deterrent and a message strong enough for first time offenders. everybody can screw up once, doesn't make sense to fill jails with these people and possibly mark them for life.

why stupid? honestly asking. because two years is too much? i.e. too severe an offence to indulge? it's one year in spain.

of course that depends on the whole punishment scale actually making sense (it doesn't much in spain, but that's another issue) and on having a good penitentiary system (i guess jail will be a considerably less traumatic experience in finland than in spain).

Because people are seen to get away with quite serious offences, while getting what is in effect just a warning not to do it again for x months.
