I used to be a big fan of using the Planetzoopedia site to plan out my habitats before building them, in particular to make sure I'm allocating enough space for mixed species habitats and that their terrain and foliage requirements overlap. But that site is not being updated with new DLC animals anymore, it seems.
Anyway, I took the time to make an Excel spreadsheet that does the same thing. It allows you to select animal species, enter the number of adults and juveniles and it will spit out all of the requirements for the habitat. It also filters the selection list so that once you select one animal, it will only show others which can be be put in the same habitat without conflicting on biome, terrain, and foliage requirements and additionally has manual filters which you can set to specify continent, biome and walk-through compatibility ahead of time.
And it has a "random" button, for those times when I can't decide what animal to go with for my next habitat. It picks one random species to "start" the habitat (at which point I manually add more compatable animals if I want it to be a mixed species habitat). I'm thinking of doing a zoo where I use random for every habitat built, just for some added challenge/variety.
I'm just posting here to share it, if anyone else wants to make use of it; it's available for download here: http://www.simfileshare.net/download/3120797/
