Had a toasty encounter with a binary last night

I thought FD had done something to stop this happening? Although that could be my memory playing tricks on me. Had a fair amount of repairing to do, left life support and power dist as not sure what will happen if I turn them off!! (common sense dictates nothing good!). All I could do was power out of the heat zone the game had dumped me in on exiting hyperspace and pray to every deity I wasn't about to explode and lose an estimated 4-500 million in exp data. Luckily I got out and without too much damage, put my AFMU to good use. Things is I hate that I have minimal control over what happens in that situation, I wondered how it could be improved as a game experience. I think we should get a warning just before exitting hyperspace in a Binary, then maybe a mini game like interdiction...if we win we exit safely if we lose we end up too close to one of the stars. At that point the game should give us an escape vector and I also think we should be able to use heatsinks in SC (handwavium to explain how that could work in SC). With all that the player has tools and an amount of control.

Not a good play session last night for another reason too, I noticed my "Systems Visited" was clearly wrong (by about 10-20 systems), what else in my codex is not updating right?

We can already use heatsinks in SC!

damn, has that always been in or added at some point (I play in intense but infrequent bursts).

Personally I like it. I've had a couple of occasions where I'm pointing at the gap between two class B stars. Gets the circulation going as I try to get out of there.

Then there was the time where I passed right next to the B star immediately on exiting supercruise. Good thing I'd put my drink down.

Indeed it adds some "danger", but I want more tools to escape (although next time I'll pop off a heatsink!)

Binary / Triple star 'close encounters' are far fewer these days, but they are amazing when it happens!

I've escaped a few encounters just by doing as the OP did, shut everything down (including LS - Distro is switched off as soon as out in the black anyway) and fly ... Often cooked a little bit, but that is why I have 2 AFMU's on board :) It certainly adds flavour to exploration...

Repairing life support in space has the same effect as a broken canopy... timer starts running of your oxygen reserves. Shouldn't be a big deal, as you can switch it right back on after repair.
Also never had a problem repairing the power distributor, but I usually do it when parked somewhere on a planet.
Just never repair the FSD while in supercruise... :D

I don't bother with heat sinks as I don't run hot and these situations happen so rarely.

On the way back from Beagle Point my Vulture, The Ronin did run into close binaries crossing The Abyss, seeming to jump in through one star and exit out of the other side of it, fuel scooping from both stars at the same time. A bit of a panic moment, but I decided to drop from supercruise as the heat percentage climbed steadily up over 100 (or maybe it was that I hit the exclusion zone of the second star from the one I jumped in through – I'm not quite sure), then let the ship cool down some before low-waking away from the stars and their center.

Took maybe 1 percent hull heat damage.

I forget where it was exactly, but it was somewhere in the middle of the route pictured below. I might go back and try to find it again to know exactly where it is and mark it as a warning or maybe even point of interest for others, as the stars were very, very close.

Frontier has changed things around a bit when jumping into systems, such as orienting ships so they're more in-line with and facing their next jump target system, and also making it so that sometimes you jump into systems further out from a star, presumably to help prevent you jumping into them or a world when entering a system. This doesn't seem like it's entirely effective though.

But either way, it was worth it, and I'm glad there is at least some small amount of real hazard out there, regardless of skill level and loadouts.

I don't mind winding up in between binaries...
It's when I go through one is what scares the ever-livin' daylights outa me!

That's what I did...damn scary!!

I think it was added at some point but it was very early. At least 2 years ago

I still can't believe I missed that, although I did most of my Elite gaming in '15,'16....hardly played in '17'18.....Explo update has brought me back this year.

Powering off your distributor just stops you from changing your pips, powering off life support just makes you use emergency oxygen until its turned back on( like you do when your canopy is blown)

Cheers both, good info. I read life support reserves don't recharge....is that true? Or does it recharge in stations....and I think I saw a synthesis option for life support.

I'm on my way to Polo Harbour (slowly following DW2) so It'll be a relief to sell my data, got a few ELWs and loads of WW mapped.

You can refill life support for 2 iron and 1 nickel, which you find on planet surfaces in the srv by shooting targetable rocks

Well I sold my data for 573 million....hehe in my 1st 2 years playng the game I made that much now it takes me 1/2 a week of exploring! I was stressing about losing that battling the binary jump.....Gawd knows how I'll cope with the other side of Sag A!!

I had a butchers at the synthesis page earlier and noticed that and more!......there's quite a lot of this game I've hardly touched....still havn't gone mining yet.
