Newcomer / Intro Han shot first

So just started playing a few days ago, have been running courrier missions to save for an upgrade to a bounty hunting cobra setup.

Anyway, came accross an assassination mission for 80k so couldent pass it up. Grabbed it and outfitted a better PP, a gimbaled cannon, and beam weapon, point defence, upped thrusters, and sheild.
Then set on my way to Kini to search for this target. Started by checking things like nav beacons and signals, most of which were jsut random CMDRs and NPS floating about doing their own thing.
Came out of jump into a fight with about 10-12 people, and was attacked immediatly, so decided to jump in. targeted a hostile ship (made sure it said hostile), and took him down. One of his friends then set one me, got a few good solid hits and i had to evade. got around him, targeted (he was red, hostile also) got a few shots into him and prompty recieved a bounty on my head for attacking him. Shortly after i was set on by about 5-6 ships and obliterated.
They werent fed ships, (who were hanging about, but i helped them as they showed friendly).

Can anyone shed some light as to why i got this bounty? when really i was jsut defending myself.

Raises a similar question also.
I had a few courrier missions and set out to deliver the cargo. Dropped the first off and checked the mission log to see which stations the next two needed to go (they were both in Erevate System), however they were gone, and in their place two fines for the Yakabugai system. A system i had prior only been to once, and didnt cause any trouble. So not sure how i picked em up, or if/how it related to the missions?
Is this a bug? or did i inadvertantly do something wrong?

Anyone have any ideas? so i can avoid doing it again.

Untill then, i guess ill retun to grinding the delivery boy gig and not getting into fights with the bigger kids :p

Regarding the fines, my guess is that you ran out of time & consequently failed those missions resulting in a fine (you took their goods right?). As for the bounty, your targets must read 'hostile' or 'wanted' otherwise you are judged to be in the wrong if you decide to attack. You will get a fine for hitting them, escalating to a bounty if you kill them. It all boils down to who shoots first really. Whoever does will get the 'wanted' tag, in this case I expect it was you (regardless of their red colour on the scanner). Always wait for your scan to complete, then decide how to proceed. :)

^ RE Fines, thats what i thought, but they had 6+hrs left when i left the first station, and it only took me 10-15mins to get to the next where i noticed em gone. The good were also gone from my cargo hold.
I can only think that i accidentally sold/jettisoned them. Though I dont recall doing so.

RE The bounty. this guy def shot first, and was hostile. My olny guess is i shot over his bow and hit someone else... as i said there was a few ships tanggled in the frey.

ah well, early days plently more credits to be earned.

Re the freight.... That does sound odd. As they weren't smuggled illegal cargo there seems no reason for the fine and they certainly should not have vanished.

Regarding assassination missions, I often found my target supercruising around the system. Sometimes they'll drop out, enabling you to follow their wake, and sometimes they'll just be in an Unidentified Signal Source area, but just in case you find your target in supercruise you probably want to bring an FSD interdictor along. Saves you from having to wait until an NPC decides to drop.. You can always sell it off after the mission if you don't want it permanently on your build.
