Hand Weapons vs Ships?

Hello Commanders,
So, I just landed next to a little outpost, no real big deal but I stole something and got in trouble. Normally, they shoot, I dodge, they shoot, I get hit, normal situation.
OK, so here is the seriously stupid problem:

A little pansey handheld weapon SHREDS my ships shields in about 5 shots.
No turrets or other ships, just a handheld weapon!

What the hell is this all about?

A ships weapon that is 5x the size of a person can take out shields normally, but a handheld weapon can literally shred shields in seconds?
Nope, I'm not talking about an SRV but a SHIP.
Kind of think the SRV fends better the an actual ship!

Am I missing something here?

Someone please drop me some information on this subject.

It's just a game... Poo happens.

Players ask for some 'challenge' in the game to merit the title of "Dangerous", then when there is, they bleat... Meh!
